Essay from the year 2006 in the subject American Studies - Literature, grade: 1,7, University of Münster, language: English, abstract: Ralph Waldo Emerson lived from 1803 until 1882. In 1821, he graduated from Harvard. The death of his wife after being married for one and a half years and his professional failure as a Unitarian minister lead to a personal crisis. At this time of his life, Emerson traveled to Europe. Here, his conviction that God can be found within the human soul develops. At the same time, his interest in nature increases, as he feels a strong connection to it. After his return to the United States and his remarriage, Emerson became a lecturer, leading the life of a distinguished intellectual. He is not particularly interested in the abolitionist movement although he is opposed to slavery in theory. After the death of his brother, who was an active opponent of slavery, Emerson finally takes part in this discussion and speaks out against slavery.

Originally published between 1909 and 1917 under the name "Harvard Classics," this stupendous 51-volume set-a collection of the greatest writings from literature, philosophy, history, and mythology-was assembled by American academic CHARLES WILLIAM ELIOT (1834-1926), Harvard University's longest-serving president. Also known as "Dr. Eliot's Five Foot Shelf," it represented Eliot's belief that a basic liberal education could be gleaned by reading from an anthology of works that could fit on five feet of bookshelf. Volume V features two collections from American poet and philosopher RALPH WALDO EMERSON (1803-1882): Essays-on such topics as "The American Scholar," "Self-Reliance," "Friendship," "Heroism," and more-and English Traits, in which he examines the British character as gathered from his travels in England.

The Poetry Notebooks of Ralph Waldo Emerson

Published here in full are Ralph Waldo Emerson's nine poetry notebooks, the single greatest source of information about his creative habits in poetry. Emerson kept rough drafts, revised versions, and fair copies of hundreds of poems in these notebooks, so that the genesis and development of poems both famous and obscure can be traced closely. The notebooks have been remarkably little consulted, primarily because their unedited textual condition makes them difficult to use. This edition makes them accessible to scholars by presenting a faithful transcription of each notebook, a detailed analysis of the history of each poem, an introduction, and a cross-referenced index. For this edition, the ...

Selected Writings of Ralph Waldo Emerson

'Standing on the bare ground--my head bathed by the blithe air and uplifted into infinite space--all mean egotism vanishes,' Emerson wrote in Nature, his statement of the principles of transcendentalism. 'I become a transparent eyeball.' Nature, published in 1836 when Emerson was thirty-three, is collected here with his book of observations on the English people; a famous sermon against administering communion in church; a sketch of his step-grandfather; the eulogy he delivered at the funeral of his Concord friend and neighbor Henry David Thoreau; twenty-three poems; and addresses, lectures, and essays on such subjects as slavery, self-reliance, and organized Christianity's obsession with th...
