Assigned to the USCGC Surveyor, DC2 Elizabeth Townsend is at the end of her last patrol when the news breaks that civilization has been destroyed. A blood-borne virus has infected the human population with an absolute mortality rate. All of the major cities have fallen; the plague has no cure. After only a week of the Infection, the crew is told, the human race is an endangered species. Once ashore, Lizzy is transferred with several crewmates to a location somewhere in the desert. She is now a ward of the government in a secure, isolated settlement-a cage necessary for survival. But beneath the peaceful exterior of the military compound and its surrounding bases, however, lie secrets that might be more dangerous for Lizzy and the survivors than the Infection itself, and the plague may not be all that is seems...
In 1888 Oswell Danford is living a hard but satisfying life as a rancher in Virginia when he receives an unexpected telegram. A wedding invitation should be cause to celebrate but not when it means he'll have to face past deeds that he's deeply ashamed of. Now he and his brother, along with their ex-compatriot, an inveterate gambler from New York, will have to travel to Montana Territory to settle an old score they'd nearly forgotten. They will join the expectant congregation at the church for the marriage of their former brother-in-arms. But while everyone else will be wishing a blissful future for the happy couple they will be praying the darkness from their past doesn't devour the entire town. A Congregation of Jackals is an unrelenting tale of betrayal and revenge told with a precision and brutality that will leave you breathless and haunted. Fans of Zahler's breakout hits Bone Tomahawk and Wraiths of the Broken Land will be floored by this, originally the first installment of his western horror trilogy.

This Special Publication contains most of the contributions presented at the 1st International Workshop on Fan Deltas (1988) but also contains additional papers which make this particular volume a very well-rounded reference source for the advanced undergraduate/graduate student and the professional earth scientist concerned with sedimentology and petroleum geology. The papers describe the sedimentology and tectonic setting of this important depositional environment. Course-grained deltas, ranging from sand to gravelly, are fully covered and the main focus is on steep-face systems whose steep subaqueous slopes are dominated by high-energy processes. The volume includes case histories from around the world and throughout the book there is emphasis on the subaqueous realm of the delta face, its sedimentary processes and facies associations
