Software is continuously increasing in complexity. Paradigmatic shifts and new development frameworks make it easier to implement software – but not to test it. Software testing remains to be a topic with many open questions with regard to both technical low-level aspects and to the organizational embedding of testing. However, a desired level of software quality cannot be achieved by either choosing a technical procedure or by optimizing testing processes. In fact, it requires a holistic approach.This Brief summarizes the current knowledge of software testing and introduces three current research approaches. The base of knowledge is presented comprehensively in scope but concise in length; thereby the volume can be used as a reference. Research is highlighted from different points of view. Firstly, progress on developing a tool for automated test case generation (TCG) based on a program’s structure is introduced. Secondly, results from a project with industry partners on testing best practices are highlighted. Thirdly, embedding testing into e-assessment of programming exercises is described.
Information system architecture (ISA) specification as a part of software engineering field has been an information systems research topic since the 60's of the 20th century. There have been manifold specification methodologies over the recent decades, developed newly or adapted in order to target the domains of software modelling, legacy systems, steel production, and automotive safety. Due to the purchase of many companies in recent years and a still growing Automotive Aftermarket business sector, it was moreover indicated that a reorganization of the Process Map is unavoidable. Anna-Lena Jäger develops a reference model for all purchasing processes in the Automotive Aftermarket business sector. The analysis of the existing processes is carried out on the basis of manuals, central directives and other relevant process documents. By contrast, the new processes are compiled and developed with the support of process experts and affect employees using individual interviews and group discussions.
The intention of this study is to predict one year in advance whether a regarded firm will grow extraordinarily in the next year. This is crucial for private investors and fund managers who need to decide whether they should invest in a certain firm. Companies like Apple and Amazon have shown that people who recognized the potential of such companies at the right time earned a lot of money. The applied prediction models can also be used by politicians to identify companies which are eligible for funding, because growing companies oftentimes hire many employees. Since annual reports are often publically available for free, it is reasonable to take advantage of them for such a prediction. The prediction models are based on classification trees and forests because they have some very substantial advantages over other methods like neural networks, which are frequently used in literature. For instance, they do not have distributional assumptions, accept both quantitative and qualitative inputs, and are not sensitive with respect to outliers. Furthermore, they are easy to understand by humans and can deal with missing values, which is crucial for practical applications.

The volume contains 23 papers read at the international conference "Historical Corpora 2012", which was hosted by the LOEWE Research Cluster "Digital Humanities" of the State of Hesse at the University of Frankfurt on December 6-8, 2012. The papers, which include three keynote speeches, have been duly updated for the present volume. The contributions take a broad variety of perspectives on "historical corpora", including their structuring, their management, and various other facets. In addition to this, they cover a large amount of different languages, extending from German - in nearly all its historical facettes - across the Romance languages into the Caucasus and from the recent past down into antiquity.
