Mobile Communication and Greater China
This edited volume examines mobile phone use in China. Unlike most studies on ICT development in China this book argues for the importance of the cultural realm as captured in mobile phone usage in reflecting the normative basis and struggle of the people. It stresses how the mobile phone is in fact an important means by which one can understand a rapidly changing China. A key concern of the book is to assert the uniqueness of China’s experience in mobile phone usage. This uniqueness is encapsulated by the phrase ‘riding the double juggernaut’, in that Chinese society is exposed to a rapid process of industrialization and cyberization in a short period of time. The contributors maintain that such density of experience under a compressed period when the society has a thick cultural heritage of its own and yet is still under a dictating rule all come together to provide a unique situation in China. .

Social Work Education and the COVID-19 Pandemic
This book examines how the shift to remote teaching in March 2020 due to the global pandemic created new opportunities for innovation and creativity and shaped how social work classes were taught, with many temporary changes now part of permanent, standard practice. Drawing on narratives from 20 social work leaders across 17 different countries, the chapters explore particular themes and viewpoints on lessons learned during the pandemic, including case studies to examine copying mechanisms, insights into the transition to remote teaching, and the creative lessons that were learned. By taking an international perspective, it represents a key contribution to the scholarship of social work leaders from around the world concerning how institutions transitioned to remote learning and teaching and how these lived experiences and new discoveries are contributing to and influencing current practice. As such, it will appeal to social work educators, researchers, and field educators around the world with interests in experimental curriculum and field practice.
Culture, Aesthetics and Affect in Ubiquitous Media
This book argues that ubiquitous media and user-created content establish a new perception of the world that can be called ‘particulate vision’, involving a different relation to reality that better represents the atomization of contemporary experience especially apparent in social media. Drawing on extensive original research including detailed ethnographic investigation of camera phone practices in Hong Kong, as well as visual analysis identifying the patterns, regularities and genres of such work, it shows how new distributed forms of creativity and subjectivity now work to shift our perceptions of the everyday. The book analyses the specific features of these new developments – the components of what can be called a ‘general aesthesia’ – and it focuses on the originality and innovation of amateur practices, developing a model for making sense of the huge proliferation of images in contemporary culture, discovering rhythms and tempo in this work and showing why it matters.

The fast diffusion of information and communication technologies (ICTs) in China has brought forth new forms of connection among the Chinese and has changed their social lives. Virtual networks have been developed and in turn have led to the formation of networks in the actual world. Gender and Employment in Rural China
