ESPE - the First 50 Years

'ESPE - The First 50 Years' tells the story of ESPE's development from a small club of friends into an international scientific society. The European Society for Paediatric Endocrinology looks back on its history, major steps in the development of this new subspecialty, and how the 30 founders and the generations of scientists who followed them achieved a democratically structured professional organisation. Success in obtaining vital long-term sponsorship from the industry enabled the development of various high-level educational programmes, fellowships, postgraduate schools, international research clusters and the establishment of prestigious scientific awards. In the second part of the book 21 senior ESPE members look back in personal recollections, and tell fascinating stories of their ESPE past. The third part provides a chronological overview with key data, including the most important scientific topics at ESPE's 50 annual meetings to date, eight of which were international Joint Meetings. These reference overviews of meetings illustrate in detail the impressive development of paediatric endocrinology in Europe and around the world.

Over recent years there has been major investment in research infrastructure to harness the potential of routinely collected health data. In 2013, The Farr Institute for Health Informatics Research was established in the UK, undertaking health informatics research to enhance patient and public health by the analysis of data from multiple sources and unleashing the value of vast sources of clinical, biological, population and environmental data for public benefit. The Medical Informatics Europe (MIE) conference is already established as a key event in the calendar of the European Federation of Medical Informatics (EFMI); The Farr Institute has been establishing a conference series. Artificial intelligence (AI) is once again in the news, with many major figures urging caution as developments in the technology accelerate. AI impacts all aspects of our lives, but perhaps the discipline of Biomedical Informatics is more affected than most, and is an area where the possible pitfalls of the technology might have particularly serious consequences. This book presents the papers delivered at ICIMTH 2023, the 21st International Conference on Informatics, Management, and Technology in Healthcare, held in Athens, Greece, from 1-3 July 2023. Prescription for Survival

“How close we came to extinction, and it is forgotten now.” So begins Nobel Prize-winner Bernard Lown’s story of his fight against the nuclear symptom of what he calls “the disease of militarism.” It is still active and highly contagious, as witnessed by events in Iran, North Korea, Pakistan, and all too many other places. And it can only be stopped, as this extraordinary memoir vividly demonstrates, by concerned citizens working together. In 1981, brimming with anxiety about the escalating nuclear confrontation with the Russians, Lown launched a USA-USSR antinuclear movement with Soviet cardiologist Evgeni Chazov: The International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War (IPP...
