Rocks Into Gold

  • Categories: Art

This Chinese art book profiles the modern, metallic sculptures of one of China's greatest contemporary artists. Rocks Into Gold is an exhibition of site-specific sculptures by Zhan Wang, one of China's most celebrated contemporary artists. The exhibition incorporates elements from two strains of the artist's work: his "scholar's rocks," sculptures in which Zhan creates shiny stainless steel replicas of the weather-worn boulders traditionally used in China for contemplation and reflection; and his "cityscape" sculptures in which Zhan creates topographical models of urban landscapes using mirrored utensils, steel pots, and pans. Combining these two distinct styles, Zhan has created an original work for the Asian Art Museum that will carry a unified theme drawing upon San Francisco and its history. Rocks Into Gold explores a sense of place, discovery and exploration while touching upon the histories of China, the American Western frontier and Chinese American immigration.

Social Capital's Impact on Innovation

Innovation is the key to the development of high-tech enterprises. As an indispensable network resource, social capital has become a hot spot in enterprise innovation research. Most of the existing research focuses on the direct promotion of social capital to enterprise innovation. However, there are few in-depth studies on the negative effects of social capital. This book puts forward the variable of decision constraint, explores its intermediary role in the relationship between social capital and innovation, and provides a useful theoretical basis and reliable decision support for high-tech enterprises that try to improve their innovation performance by accumulating social capital.

In China, naturally formed rocks called jiashanshiare collected in pantheistic reverence of creation and the cosmos. For the past two decades, Chinese artist Zhan Wang has been replicating these forms in stainless steel. Sometimes monumental in scale, the artist's "artificial rocks" explore the nexus of nature, industry and artifice.

At the end of the Qing dynasty, works of fiction by male authors placed women in new roles. Fiction’s Family delves into the writings of one literary family from western Zhejiang whose works were emblematic of shifting attitudes toward women. The mother, Wang Qingdi, and the father, Zhan Sizeng, published their poems during the second half of the nineteenth century. Two of their four sons, Zhan Xi and Zhan Kai, wrote novels that promoted reforms in women’s lives. This book explores the intergenerational link, as well as relations between the sons, to find out how the conflicts faced by the parents may have been refigured in the novels of their sons. Its central question is about the brot...
