The Crises of "Language and Dead Signs" in Ludwig Tieck's Prose Fiction

Critical account of the works of Ludwig Tieck, the German Romantic writer, from a linguistic viewpoint. Although twentieth-century literary criticism has focused on language as a topic of discussion, critical evalutions of Romanticism and Romantic writers rarely deal with it in terms derived from the philosophy of language. This book evaluates the most prolific German Romanticist, Ludwig Tieck (1773-1853), from such a linguistic viewpoint, arguing that concerns in his work can be seen as forerunners of later language analysis, from speech-act theory to theories of reference. It covers Tieck's whole career, from his youth to his final novel, Vittoria Accorombona, providing a comprehensive analysis of this major author's work; it will also be of interest to those interested in the linguistic aspects of Romanticism.

"Poetry and philosophy from the time of Kant to the mid-twentieth century are centrally concerned with the question of how the Spirit - or the Holy Spirit - is present in the world. This book argues that the development of modern poetry in German and English can be seen as a protracted response to the religious crises of post-Idealist thought. The German tradition develops through poets such as Holderlin as much as through philosophers such as Hegel and Nietzsche, and in England German ideas profoundly influenced the British Idealist school. Cooper's compelling study makes parallel readings of German and English writers with deeper historically-based affinities than has previously been realised. Eduard Morike and Gerard Manley Hopkins, both churchmen, each studied Idealism as undergraduates in their respective countries: each responded to it in his spiritual verse. And we find similar parallels in two of the defining works of twentieth century poetry: between Rilke's response to Nietzsche in the Duino Elegies, and Eliot's response to Bradley in the Four Quartets. In line with contemporary literary theory which views the «self» as a societal «construction» and strategic narrative device, this study explores Rilke's preoccupations with identity in his work, as he investigates the disintegration of the subjective self in the modern world.
