Depicting the famous meeting of Wellington and Blucher directly after their joint victory over Napoleon at the Battle of Waterloo on 18 June 1815, Maclise's monumental 'cartoon' caused a sensation when it was first shown at the House of Lords in 1859. Everything was evocative to the highest degree: from the vast scale to the magnificent craftsmanship, to the picture's theme, which refuses to glamorise war and affords Waterloo's victims as much attention as its heroes. And although it has rarely been exhibited, this 'cartoon' remains a powerful work of art to this day. In this concise but comprehensive volume Annette Wickham looks in detail at the story of the cartoon's creation and the reaso...

Impressionist master Claude Monet began over forty versions of Waterloo Bridge during his three London sojourns between 1899 and 1901. He viewed his paintings of the landmark bridge both individually and as an ensemble, collectively expressing his sense of the essential subject - the atmosphere and colors of the fog-bound landscape of London's Thames River. Monet struggled to complete these paintings after his return to France, where he re-worked many of the canvases in his Giverny studio, releasing them for sale over the course of several years. The exhibition Monet's Waterloo Bridge: Vision and Process brings together eight paintings from the famous London series. Scholarly essays and an in-depth technical study of the Memorial Art Gallery's Waterloo Bridge, Veiled Sun (1903) explore Monet's artistic vision as well as the process by which he struggled to achieve that vision. NANCY NORWOOD is Curator of European Art, Memorial Art Gallery, Rochester, New York.

In the Black Fantastic

  • Categories: Art

In the Black Fantastic assembles art and imagery from across the African diaspora that embraces ideas of the mythic and the speculative. Neither Afrofuturism nor Magic Realism, but inhabiting its own universe, In the Black Fantastic brings to life a cultural movement that conjures otherworldly visions out of the everyday Black experience and beyond looking at how speculative fictions in Black art and culture are boldly reimagining perspectives on race, gender, identity and the body in the 21st century. Transcending time, space and genre to span art, design, fashion architecture, film, literature and popular culture from African myth to future fantasies and beyond, this vital, timely and compelling publication is an expressive exploration of Black popular culture at its most wildly imaginative, artistically ambitious and politically urgent.

A showcase of the Courtauld Gallery's outstanding Parmigianino collection. Accompanying an exhibition at London's Courtauld Gallery, this stunning catalog presents works by the Renaissance artist Girolamo Francesco Maria Mazzola, better known as Parmigianino (1503-1540). Fundamentally a draftsman at heart, Parmigianino drew relentlessly during his relatively short life, and around a thousand of his drawings have survived. The Courtauld's collection comprises twenty-four sheets. In preparation for the catalog, new photography and technical examinations have been carried out on all the works, revealing two new drawings that were previously unknown, hidden underneath their historic mounts. They have also helped to better identify connections between some of the drawings and the finished paintings for which they were conceived. This stunning illustrated catalog presents the whole Courtauld collection and sheds light on an artist who approached every technique with unprecedented freedom and produced innovative works that are still admired by artists and collectors today.

After Napoleon's defeat and exile on Elba in 1814, it looked as if his extraordinary military career had come to an end. But then the Emperor escaped and made a last stand, which climaxed on June 18, 1815, when almost 200,000 Prussian, British, and French soldiers clashed at Waterloo. Published to mark the 200th anniversary, The Battle of Waterloo Experience is a compelling new treatment of the Hundred Days campaign, beautifully illustrated and including reproductions of contemporary letters and documents that graphically portray the background to Napoleon's final overthrow.

Out of The Sun

History is a construction. What happens when we bring stories consigned to the margins up to the light? How does that complicate our certainties about who we are, as individuals, as nations, as human beings? As in her fiction, the essays in Out of the Sun demonstrate Esi Edugyan's commitment to seeking out the stories of Black lives that history has failed to record. In five wide-ranging essays, written with the rise of the Black Lives Matter movement in the background, Edugyan reflects on her own identity and experiences. She delves into the history of Western Art and the truths about Black lives that it fails to reveal, and the ways contemporary Black artists are reclaiming and reimagining those lives. She explores and celebrates the legacy of Afrofuturism, the complex and problematic practice of racial passing, the place of ghosts and haunting in the imagination, and the fascinating relationship between Africa and Asia dating back to the 6th Century. With calm, piercing intelligence, Edugyan asks difficult questions about how we reckon with the past and imagine the future.

'A fabulous story, superbly told' Max Hastings The bloodbath at Waterloo ended a war that had engulfed the world for over twenty years. It also finished the career of the charismatic Napoleon Bonaparte. It ensured the final liberation of Germany and the restoration of the old European monarchies, and it represented one of very few defeats for the glorious French army, most of whose soldiers remained devoted to their Emperor until the very end. Extraordinary though it may seem much about the Battle of Waterloo has remained uncertain, with many major features of the campaign hotly debated. Most histories have depended heavily on the evidence of British officers that were gathered about twenty ...
