This book is a study of a Christian theology without words, focussing on theology in the Deaf Community. Deaf people's first and preferred method of communication is not English or any other spoken language, but British Sign Language - a language that cannot be written down. Deaf people of faith attend church on a regular basis, profess faith in God and have developed unique approaches to doing theology. While most Western theology is word-centred and is either expressed through or dependent on written texts, theology in the Deaf Community is largely non-written. This book presents and examines some of that theology from the Deaf Community and argues that written texts are not necessary for creative theological debate, a deep spirituality or for ideas about God to develop.

All the art featured in this book, were done in the years1991 to 1999.From Noosa Heads, Australia to the sunny beaches of the South Bay, California, USA.The journey started much earlier. I lucked out and got the right lottery ticket. My toys were in the form of Pens and Pencils. SomehowI had got wind of Picasso, and it could be said, he as an artist amongst the many, that has influenced and inspired me, got it started and kept me on the path.

Theological perspectives on the experience of disability are now a key area within contextual and constructive theologies. In Theology and Disability, Wayne Morris asks to what extent the texts that form most of the traditions considered to be authoritative in Christian theology exclude people with disabilities from contributing to theological understanding. Wayne Morris engages both theology and disability in critical conversation, and the outcome of this conversation is the development of new insights and challenges that are offered both to Christian theology and to thinking about disability. He recognizes the complexity of speaking about both theology and disability as 'umbrella' terms and so focuses on only one part of the contribution of each conversation partner per chapter. The aim is finally to construct new ways of thinking about theology and disability, conscious that each chapter is never the final word on the subject, but rather that the conversation must continue beyond this book.

Will people of other faiths be 'saved' and to what extent should the response to this question shape Christian engagements with people of other faiths? Historically, the predominant answer to these questions has been that the person of another faith will not be saved and is therefore in need of conversion to Christianity for their salvation to be possible. Consequently, it has been understood to be the obligation of Christian persons to convert people of other faiths. More recent theologies of religions for the past half century and more have sought to reconsider these approaches to soteriology. This has sometimes led to a reaffirmation of the status quo and at other times to an alternative ...

Transforming Exclusion

Transforming Exclusion is concerned with the interface between the study of religion & theology and issues surrounding exclusion. Religious beliefs can be important in shaping attitudes that can lead to the exploitation or marginalization of both humans and non-humans. At the same time, religious beliefs and practices have much to offer in transforming the world, creating a more equitable place for all who occupy it. At other times, the voices of members of religious communities are suppressed and marginalized by other more dominant religious or secular individuals or communities. This book addresses all of these aspects of social exclusion and aims to demonstrate that the study of theology and religion, in addressing religious communities and society more widely, have important contributions to make in creating a more just world. The issue of exclusion is engaged with from a range of different perspectives by scholars involved in fieldwork with religious communities, systematic, contextual and practical theologians, and practitioners involved in the preparation of individuals and groups for a range of ministries and professions.

Acedia and the Transformation of Spiritual Malaise

Fr Martin McAlinden's research focussed on the spiritual malaise experienced by many priests in the Catholic Church in Ireland. In response, he developed a theology rooted in the ancient notion of acedia and used this as a way of talking about the spiritual crises many priests experience and how this spiritual malaise might be transformed.

Memories of Hitchhiking

This is my personal account of hitchhiking, back in 1975. It is a story that should be nostalgic to people of my age group, and yet demonstrative of what the younger generation can achieve, in this time of aanything can be possiblea if you go after a dream. Throughout the pages, I have tried to entwine humor, home-sickness, adventure, making friends, self-efficiency, and just enjoying the gift of life.
