Improving the safety for blood and blood product transfusion It is amazing that in the first years of the 21st century there are insufficient blood supplies and that some supplies are unsafe in certain areas of the world. Regulations and codes call for continuous improvement in processes and attitudes to assure safety everywhere. To that end nearly 200 transfusionists and their colleagues gathered in Sydney in October 2005 to conduct a marathon symposium on methods and advances made towards achieving universal safety for blood and blood product transfusion. Sponsors of the latest products joined in to support this extraordinary meeting of information and ideas. Advances in transfusion safety were put forward from all areas of the blood transfusion process, including establishment of services, donor selection, infections that may affect donors, safe testing, risk and safety assessment, the roles of government and regulation, the use of blood and its products as well as the need for effective communication. The resulting papers from internationally renowned experts are published in these proceedings.

With increasing age the individual risk of suffering from one or more diseases and health-related impairments grows, therefore population aging, as an increase in the number and proportion of older people, represents a major challenge for public health in western countries. This affects several areas of life, especially in the fields of public health and health care (e.g., rising demand for health care services and nursing care, prevention, etc.). In addition, living in ones own home as long as possible (aging in place) represents one of the challenges of population aging. The “baby boomer” generation are a unique aspect of population aging. In Germany, this generation is in the last third of its working life, retiring soon. Therefore, health care for baby boomers is a challenge when it comes to their earning capacity and the maintenance of qualified employees and their healthy aging.
Throughout history, patterns have come in countless permutations of motif, colour-way and scale. Yet what all have in common is the regularity of repetition, that insistent rhythm that animates a flat surface with a sense of movement and vitality and gives it depth. Evident in the arrangement of petals on a flower head, the branching growth of stems and vines, the spirals of a seashell - pattern is inherent in the natural world that surrounds us. Powerful and transformative, pattern has an irrepressible joie de vivre. With more than 1,500 illustrations of patterns from all ages and cultures, Pattern Design is a visual feast. This comprehensive compendium is arranged thematically according to type, with chapters on Flora, Fauna, Pictorial, Geometric and Abstract designs. These broad categories are supplemented by in-depth features highlighting the work of key designers from the rich history of pattern-making - such as William Morris, Sonia Delaunay, Charles and Ray Eames, Lucienne Day and Orla Kiely - along with sections detailing the characteristic motifs of key period styles from Baroque to Art Deco.
