Dreams and Visions have constituted an important topic and point of departure in the past; but also continue to play a present role in literature, political thought, economic theory, and in the arts. An essential historical topos, Dreams and Visions--the second in a series that projects past issues into the present--brings significant contributions from an interdisciplinary spectrum of standpoints in order to discover fresh insights. Perhaps this is the essence, in any case, of "Vision"--to discover new, fresh ways of conceptualizing a problem, topic, or historical enquiry, which is the goal of this volume. Contributors are Tamara Albertini, David Bevington, Eolene M. Boyd-MacMillan, John N. Crossley, J. Harold Ellens, Wendy Furman-Adams, Robert W. Hanning, Virginia K. Henderson, Birgitta Lindros Wohl, Ann R. Meyer, Ana M. Montero, Michael Murrin, Wendy Petersen Boring, Conrad Rudolph, Nancy Van Deusen, Joanna Woods-Marsden, and Meg Worley.

Claiming God

Marilyn McCord Adams (1943–2017) was a world-renowned philosopher, a theologian who forever changed conversations about God and evil, a compelling preacher, and a fierce advocate for the full belonging of LGBTQ+ people, especially in churches. Over the course of her career, she mentored philosophers, theologians, pastors, and activists. In this book, authors from each of these fields engage and expand upon McCord Adams’s work. Chapters address theodicy and the Holocaust, the nature and limits of human free will, sexual violence, Trinitarian relations, beatific vision, friendship, climate change, and how to protest heterosexism with truth, humor, and cookies. Examples of McCord Adams’s revised Episcopal liturgies—previously unpublished—are used to affirm the expansive love of God. Accessible and varied, these essays attest to McCord Adams’s vocational integration, as she claimed and proclaimed God’s goodness in her different professional roles.

“Don’t Disturb my Masterpiece!”

This book explores a philosophy of learning inspired by humanistic ideals. It reflects on the transformative possibilities opened up by active engagement with experiential domains. It draws attention to epoch-making transformations in the history of Western civilization that have exposed the dynamic relation between conscience, emotions, and learning. An ecological model of learning is proposed that emphasizes emotional, ethical, and cognitive learning as holistic processes. The model focuses on the pragmatics of learning, the creativity of improvisation, rhetorically mediated experience, emotional settings, and the education of the senses. The book is based on an inclusive worldview. Its fundamental tenet is that rational inquiry, emotions, and morality form a continuum in human nature. Hence the book envisions novel scenarios, where learners are valued for their genuine struggle to realize their humane masterpieces.

Thinking Theologically contains new insights into the place of the divine ideas in the pedagogical design of Aquinas’s Summa Theologiae. It subsequently challenges the false dichotomy between philosophy and theology in the interpretation of Aquinas’s engagement with the doctrine.

Teaching Sustainability

"American colleges and universities have been relatively quick to address the challenge of sustainability in operations. Ironically, they have been slower to respond in regard to their core mission: educating students. Teaching sustainability aims to redress this shortcoming by opening doors to education for sustainability in the humanities and social sciences. The essays in this collection are richly diverse. They investigate ways sustainability education "pushes back" against traditional disciplines while it simultaneously benefits from the perspectives and skills these fields have to offer. They also address "big questions" such as how to make education meaningful, how to examine hidden a...

Contemplative Practices and Acts of Resistance in Higher Education

The contributors to this volume – educators, student affairs practitioners, and higher education staff – heartfully share a broad range of contemplative practices and acts of resistance used within the confines of shattered systems and institutions for themselves, their colleagues, and their students. The narratives in this volume broadly imagine, inspire, recount, and guide readers toward the fullness of their humanity and wholeness within institutions of higher education. At the same time, these accounts navigate the operational realities of daunting demands on the mind, body, and spirit, the growing turbulence of working on higher education campuses across the country, and a sense of ...
