Quantification of hydrological processes and water requirements of aquatic ecosystems is required for many projects related to environmental security and efficient water use in agriculture. This also applies to the Asian monsoon region. This paper focuses on the Walawe River basin, located in a semi-arid zone of southern Sri Lanka. The two major reservoirs in the upstream and middle reaches of the river with a total capacity of 486 million cubic meters (MCM) have significantly affected the hydrology of the river, with associated adverse environmental and social consequences.

Ruhuna Benchmark Badin in southern Sri Lanka is one of four benchmark basins identify by IWMI for long term research and capacity building. As an institute involved in long term research in this area, IWMI held a network meeting to share the collaborators’ views and opinions on issues such as optimization of water utilization and water productivity, and environment and health. The meeting will help identify these issues and related research questions as the basis for the development of the research program.

Environmental Flows in Water Resources Policies, Plans, and Projects

This book advances the understanding and integration in operational terms of environmental flows (water allocation) into integrated water resources management (IWRM). Based on an in-depth analysis of 17 global water policy, plan, and project case studies, it addresses the highly contested complexities of environmentally responsible water resources development, broadens the global perspectives on "equitable sharing" and "sustainable use" of water resources, and expands the definitions of "benefits sharing" in high-risk water resources development. The book fills a major gap in knowledge on IWRM and forms an important contribution to the ongoing discourse on climate change adaptation in the water sector.

The Indian Ocean Tsunami

On December 26, 2004, a massive tsunami triggered by an underwater earthquake pummeled the coasts of Thailand, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, and other countries along the Indian Ocean. With casualties as far away as Africa, the aftermath was overwhelming: ships could be spotted miles inland; cars floated in the ocean; legions of the unidentified dead—an estimated 225,000—were buried in mass graves; relief organizations struggled to reach rural areas and provide adequate aid for survivors. Shortly after this disaster, researchers from around the world traveled to the region’s most devastated areas, observing and documenting the tsunami’s impact. The Indian Ocean Tsunami: The Global Response t...

Modeling Water Resources Management at the Basin Level

This report develops an integrated economic-hydrologic river basin model and applies it to the Maipo River Basin in central Chile. Policy simulations based on the modeling framework can serve as a guide for water resource managers and policymakers in designing appropriate water policies and establishing reform priorities for water resource allocation. Alternative analyses undertaken for the Maipo basin-a mature water economy with limited resources and competition for water across all water-using sectors-offer new insights into the changing relationships between irrigation system and basin-level water use efficiencies. They also show how these changing relationships affect farm incomes and environmental impacts. Simulations also provide new results on the role that the trading of water use rights can play in maintaining farm production levels, enhancing farmer incomes, and increasing water use efficiencies.

More Crop Per Drop

This volume is an analytical summary and a critical synthesis of research at the International Water Management Institute over the past decade under its evolving research paradigm known popularly as 'more crop per drop'. The research synthesized here covers the full range of issues falling in the larger canvas of water-food-health-environment interface. Besides its immediate role in sharing knowledge with the research, donor, and policy communities, this volume also has a larger purpose of promoting a new way of looking at the water issues within the broader development context of food, livelihood, health and environmental challenges. More crop per drop: Revisiting a research paradigm contra...

Water and Cities

This report focuses on the urban water management challenges facing cities across OECD countries, and explores both national and local policy responses with respect to water-risk exposure, the state of urban infrastructures and dynamics, and institutional and governance architectures. The analyses focus on four mutually dependent dimensions – finance, innovation, urban-rural co-operation and governance – and proposes a solutions-oriented typology based on urban characteristics. The report underlines that sustainable urban water management will depend on collaboration across different tiers of government working together with local initiatives and stakeholders.
