Work of WHO in the Western Pacific Region
This report discusses the activities of the WHO in Western Pacific area in the period July 2003 to June 2004. Topics considered include: communicable diseases and immunisation programmes; health promotion, environmental health and injury prevention; child and adolescent health and nutrition; reproductive health; noncommunicable diseases and mental health; health systems development and financing; human resources; health technology and pharmaceuticals; and health information.
Climate Change and Health in the Western Pacific Region
There is serious concern about the impact of the changing climate. The WHO Regional Office for the Western Pacific has taken the initiative in addressing health issues related to climate change but further action is needed to support efforts to confront climate change in Member States and in various sectors. Health must be mainstreamed into efforts to address climate change and action must be coordinated and integrated across national boundaries and in all sectors. This report synthesizes information and approaches on climate change and health pertinent to Member States in the Western Pacific Region. It also examines efforts and initiatives by various experts and stakeholders with an in-depth look at experiences in seven Member States that reflect the diversity of the Region. Finally it offers recommendations for policy-makers.
Women and Health in the Western Pacific Region
"This report, Women and health in the Western Pacific Region: remaining challenges and new opportunities, is a further step in advancing WHO's commitment to women's health. As the report shows, women and girls have particular health needs that remain invisible and little understood and that health systems are failing them. Some of these are health needs that only women have because of their biological role. Others are those related to all of the health problems that they share with boys and men throughout their lives. The Western Pacific Region has achieved considerable improvements in women's health. However, a significant unfinished agenda remains, with millions of women in the Region facing a variety of avoidable health challenges throughout their lives. Accelerating progress requires renewed political commitment, stronger government leadership, women-friendly health policies, programmes and services and actions across sectors to address the multiple determinants of women's health. It is hoped that this report contributes to strengthening the evidence base on the health of women in the Region and provides the basis for more vigorous action."--Page iii.
Guiding Health Systems Development in the Western Pacific
Beyond the MDGs and their 2015 deadline, the goal of universal health coverage (UHC) is of growing importance, with its core elements of better health outcomes, greater equity and improved financial protection. It is vital that countries' policy decisions be guided by the best available knowledge. In this context, WHO's role as a knowledge-based technical support agency is becoming more crucial. To support Western Pacific Member States' advance towards UHC, WHO has in recent years produced adaptable regional strategies for health system development. This innovative review of the six current regional health system strategies has assessed their usefulness to countries across the Region. This summary report outlines the main findings of the review as well as its objectives, methods, limitations, and implications for the future.
Regional Framework for Action on Food Safety in the Western Pacific
The Western Pacific Regional Food Safety Strategy 2011-2015 has contributed to good progress in food safety across the Western Pacific Region. However more than 125 million people fall ill and more than 50 000 die annually from unsafe food in the Region. Regional Strategy and Plan of Action for Measles and Rubella Elimination in the Western Pacific
The Regional Strategy and Plan of Action for Measles and Rubella Elimination in the Western Pacific was endorsed by the 68th session of the WHO Regional Committee in 2017. This document was developed in consultation with Member States and technical partners through carefully analysing the unsolved issues and emerging challenges that led to the regional resurgence of measles and outbreaks of rubella during 2013-2016. The document will guide development of national plans of action for achieving and sustaining measles and rubella elimination with country-specific strategies and activities that are tailored for addressing issues and challenges faced by each country and area of the region.
Human Resources for Health. Action Framework for the Western Pacific Region (2011-2015)
The Regional Strategy on Human Resources for Health (2006-2015) endorsed in resolution WPR/RC57.R7 by the WHO Regional Committee in 2006 guided the collaborative actions of WHO and Member States in strengthening health workforce responsiveness to population health needs through enhanced health system performance and service quality. These actions included strengthening of national human resource strategic planning and human resources for health (HRH) information systems; reviews and updating of regulatory systems; initiatives addressing the quality and relevance of health professional education; analyses of policy options for rural and remote retention in selected countries along with publication of global evidence-based policy recommendations on the same issue; and the formulation and dissemination of subregional and global codes of practice for the international recruitment of health workers.
Human Resources for Health Country Profiles
The Human Resources for Health (HRH) country profiles series present an overview of the health workforce in the countries of the Western Pacific region. They serve as a tool for communicating sharing information and informing policy dialogue. These country profiles are also nurtured with the most recent data and information on HRH available in each country and they aim to help monitoring the HRH situation in the countries and across the region.
Regional Action Plan for Neglected Tropical Diseases in the Western Pacific Region (2012-2016)
Neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) are a public health issue in 28 countries and areas in the Western Pacific Region. Although some Member States have made remarkable progress in NTD control and elimination, there is a vital need to consolidate these successes and further reduce the burden of diseases. NTD elimination and control efforts are recognized as one of the most cost-effective interventions in global health today. This document serves as the Region's NTD road map for the next five years linking the WHO Global NTD road map with national NTD plans of action and aimed at achieving the regional goal to reduce the health and socioeconomic impact due to NTDs and in contributing to the achievement of MDG.
