In July 1980, two weeks before the Gdansk shipyard strikes, Roman Laba arrived in Poland as an American graduate student. He stayed there for almost two and a half years before he was arrested and expelled from the country for "activities noxious to the interests of the Polish state." Laba had set himself the ambitious task of documenting the history of Poland's free trade union. Jubileusze związane z ważnymi wydarzeniami w życiu ludzi nauki często przynoszą okolicznościowe publikacje zawierające zbiór tekstów, najczęściej autorów z najbliższego środowiska Jubilata, nawiązujących zazwyczaj do jego dokonań i obszaru zainteresowań badawczych. Do tego rodzaju publikacji należy również recenzowany tom przygotowany z myślą o uczczeniu 65. rocznicy urodzin dr hab. Wiesławy Kwiatkowskiej, prof. UMK, dotychczasowego kierownika Zakładu Archiwistyki IHiA UMK w Toruniu. Na zawartość tytułowej Księgi składa się wstęp autorstwa dr. hab. Waldemara Chorążyczewskiego oraz 16 artykułów oscylujących wokół zagadnień teorii i metodyki archiwalnej, a więc tego obszaru archiwistyki, jakiemu Szacowna Jubilatka poświęciła większość swoich publikacji z okresu pracy naukowej na Uniwersytecie Mikołaja Kopernika w Toruniu. This book constitutes the thoroughly refereed post-proceedings of the 4th International Conference on Parallel Processing and Applied Mathematics, PPAM 2002, held in Naleczow, Poland, in September 2001. The 101 papers presented were carefully reviewed and improved during two rounds of reviewing and revision. The book offers topical sections on distributed and grid architectures, scheduling and load balancing, performance analysis and prediction, parallel non-numerical algorithms, parallel programming, tools and environments, parallel numerical algorithms, applications, and evolutionary computing and neural networks.
East Central Europe in Exile Volume 1
The East Central Europe in Exile series consists of two volumes which contain chapters written by both esteemed and renowned scholars, as well as young, aspiring researchers whose work brings a fresh, innovative approach to the study of migration. Altogether, there are thirty-eight chapters in both volumes focusing on the East Central European émigré experience in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The first volume, Transatlantic Migrations, focuses on the reasons for emigration from the lands of East Central Europe; from the Baltic to the Adriatic, the intercontinental journey, as well as on the initial adaptation and assimilation processes. The second volume is slightly different in scope, for it focuses on the aspect of negotiating new identities acquired in the adopted homeland. The authors contributing to Transatlantic Identities focus on the preservation of the East Central European identity, maintenance of contacts with the “old country”, and activities pursued on behalf of, and for the sake of, the abandoned homeland. Combined, both volumes describe the transnational processes affecting East Central European migrants.
