After a gymnasium course at Weilburg, he studied theology at the universities of Marburg, Gottingen and Giessen. Having received the highest prize, he was advised to continue his studies at the University of Bonn, and from that time he devoted himself exclusively to history. He took up this study in a manner wholly different from that of his predecessors and laid the foundation of a new science Kulturgeschichte.
