Known as the master Dutch engraver of his time, as important for engraving as Rembrandt was for etching, Hendrick Goltzius was a pivotal printmaker of the late 16th century. His engaging subjects and highly versatile technique earned him praise and commissions throughout Europe. Drawing on collections throughout the state, including University of San Diego, LACMA, and the Achenbach Foundation for Graphic Arts as well as the Crocker, this exhibition brings together nearly 60 works for the first in-depth California exhibition on Goltzius in twenty years. At the core of this collaborative exhibition are Goltzius's Life of the Virgin and Passion of Christ series which show his chameleon-like vir...

In an Alaskan bar, Creighton Roane watches a TV news story about multiple, gruesome murders that have occurred in a mountainous region of Tennessee. He is stunned when he recognizes the murder scene as the Findhorn River and the rugged Arn plateau, his childhood home. Memories stirred by the newscast develop into recurring nightmares as Creighton becomes aware of his own needs to see the mountains of his childhood and of reconciliation with his father. But the Findhorn valley hides whiskey-making murderous clans and revenge killings that span generations. An ancient stone fort sitting on the Arn plateau houses its own mystery of the massacre of the moon-eyed people and of the mentally unstable killer who gives his victims an amulet for their trip to the hereafter. Wrapped around all this is the gut-churning rapids of the Findhorn and the effect it has on those challenging its treacherous waters.

Purchased for the most part in 1869-71 by the founders of the Crocker Art Museum, the master drawings in this rich historic collection are in some ways a time capsule that gives insight into the European art market and the taste of the patrons. Through this catalogue the Museum introduces a selection of the best drawings to the public for the first time, and provides a splendid overview of this unique collection, shedding fuller light on its history and context, both in relation to California events and to American patronage.
