Travel journal kept by William Downes Cheever of Boston, Mass., from 7 November 1778 - 24 May 1779, describing his voyage to Europe from Salem, Massachusetts, in the Dutch ship NUELANDE VELLVERT. Entries record weather, winds, fear of British ships, and events on board the ship (including disputes between French passengers and the Dutch captain), meals, and the loss of a man at sea. William Downes Cheever spent time in France, the Netherlands, and the low countries on business during the Revolutionary War and recorded sightseeing and social engagements.
