Life and Times of the Right Honourable William Henry Smith, M.P

This is a lively two-volume biography, first published in 1893, of the influential Victorian businessman and politician W. H. Smith (1825-1891), whose father and uncle established the well-known stationery and bookselling business. The author, Herbert Maxwell (1845-1932), was a Scottish essayist and Conservative Member of Parliament who greatly admired Smith's human qualities and had access to his personal papers. Volume 1 documents the foundation of the newspaper wholesaling business, Smith's education and his thwarted desire to become a priest. It describes how Smith helped his father expand their efficient and successful business to include a chain of railway station news- and bookstalls and a lending library, as well as becoming sole agents for The Times in 1854. Smith went into Parliament in 1868, and worked for several years at the Treasury. Volume 1 ends with his tour to Cyprus in 1878 as First Lord of the Admiralty.

Four hundred years after his death, Smith's charity is one of the largest in Britain distributing c £25m pa to a wide range of UK charities yet its founder has been nearly forgotten. So who exactly was Henry Smith? Over the years a startling variety of myths and misinformation have clustered like barnacles on a few shreds of evidence. In some chronicles Smith had been described as a salt merchant, in others he was a silver smith; in one nineteenth-century account, he was reported to have himself been a captive of Moorish pirates. The most persistent myth of all was the wildest: that Henry Smith was one and the same as a character known as “Dog Smith” who, dressed like a vagrant, wandered...

Poetry. African & African American Studies. LGBTQIA Studies. Environmental Studies. Photography. Hybrid. WILD PEACH is a multisensory roaming of landscape and interior, often (but not always) in near stillness and varying light. The power to disrupt and obscure language is an essential tool in protecting this multimodal endeavor; in this project, poetry and photography warm the taste of memory, exploring nonlinear, non-narrative time through the sonic offerings of image and text--and the Outdoors, the interpersonal, and all offered onto. Black Secrecy demands and provides a spirit of collaboration, study, and play. Rest without guilt. Two steppin' in the parking lot. Screaming into the night sky. In the garden and the noise, what must be learned from the garble? We listen. The ocean is always just over your shoulder.
