Will the United States Survive Until 2084?

The present study treats the practices of Western banking and contrasts them broadly with Islamic banking. It illumines the "invisible treads" uniting war and capitalism, following the lead of Werner Sombart. An example of money inflation is adduced from the sixteenth century precedent of bullion inflation and its economic consequences. For long-term analysis as well as predictive value the author adopts the "long cycle" hypothesis of the Russian economist K.D. Dmitriev and as expounded by contemporary Russian economists. The author concludes that the operation of the sixth "long wave" of economic acceleration may well necessitate the collapse and transformation of the current American polit...

Sophocles’ Jebb

Sir Richard Jebb (1841–1905) was the most celebrated classical scholar in late Victorian Britain: his edition of Sophocles, which remains a classic, brought him a knighthood. Professor of Greek at Cambridge from 1889, and MP for the University from 1891 until his death, Jebb became a national spokesman for the humanities. “Sophocles’ Jebb” charts his career through 275 newly discovered letters, presented here with introductions and full annotation. By allowing Jebb and his contemporaries to speak in their own words, it enables a significant reassessment of a key cultural figure of late Victorian Britain and sheds fresh light on public and academic debate of the time. The volume ends with a new, comprehensive list of Jebb’s publications.

Active Radio

In a searing critique of the War on Drugs and other attempts to eradicate "getting high, " Lenson ventures outside the conventional genres of drug writing and looks at the drug debate from a lost, and often forbidden, point of view: the user's. Walking a fine line between the antidrug hysteria prevalent in our culture and an uncritical advocacy of drug use, he describes in provocative detail the experiences and dynamics of drugs of pleasure and desire.
