William Sheridan Allen’s research provides an intimate, comprehensive study of the mechanics of revolution and an analysis of the Nazi Party’s subversion of democracy. Beginning at the end of the Weimar Republic, Allen examines the entire period of the Nazi Revolution within a single locality. Tackling one of the 20th century’s greatest dilemmas, Allen demonstrates how this dictatorship subtly surmounted democracy and how the Nazi seizure of power encroached from below. Relying upon legal records and interviews with primary sources, Allen dissects Northeim, Germany with microscopic precision to depict the transformation of a sleepy town to a Nazi stronghold. In this cogent analysis, Allen argues that Hitler rose to power primarily through democratic tactics that incited localized support rather than through violent means. Allen’s detailed, analysis has indisputably become a classic. Revised on the basis of newly discovered Nazi documents, The Nazi Seizure of Power: The Experience of a Single German Town, 1922–1945 continues to significantly contribute to the understanding of this prominent political and moral dispute of the 1900s.
Documents the propaganda and politics that brought Naziism to power in one German town where the population was predominately Lutheran and the largest local employer was the Civil Service.
Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book. Sample Book Insights: #1 The town of Northeim was the center of prewar Germany. It was a small town with a population of about ten thousand in 1930. The town was surrounded by walls that enclosed the medieval inner core. The most desirable area was on the hillside above the old town, where you could see town and valley. #2 The town of Northeim was built around a medieval city, with three areas where it had expanded: up the hill and toward each of the two rivers. The center and essence of Northeim remained the old medieval city, surrounded by the slowly crumbling walls. #3 The town of Northeim was able to recover slowly from the Black Death. It was not until the French Revolution that the town regained its population, about 2,500 people. The town was able to acquire a variety of technical academies and college preparatory schools in the 1870s. #4 Northeim was a center for the violently right-wing Jung Deutsche Orden in the 1920s. The town was torn apart by strife and division, and it would experience the death agony of German democracy within a few years.

Krebs was discharged in March 1919, leaving him free to begin studies in Germanistics, history, national economics, and English language in Würzburg, Tübingen, Marburg and Frankfurt am Main. In 1922, he graduated and in the same year, he joined the Nazi party, the NSDAP. Krebs had been busying himself in the youth movement even before the war. ...

*A TIMES AND TELEGRAPH BOOK OF THE YEAR* WHAT CAUSED THE FALL OF THE MOST PROGRESSIVE GOVERNMENT IN TWENTIETH-CENTURY EUROPE, AND THE RISE OF THE MOST TERRIFYING? In the 1930s, Germany was at a turning point, with many looking to the Nazi phenomenon as part of widespread resentment towards cosmopolitan liberal democracy and capitalism. This was a global situation that pushed Germany to embrace authoritarianism, nationalism and economic self-sufficiency, kick-starting a revolution founded on new media technologies, and the formidable political and self-promotional skills of its leader. Based on award-winning research and recently discovered archival material, The Death of Democracy is a panoramic new survey of one of the most important periods in modern history, and a book with a resounding message for the world today. 'Extremely fine... with careful prose and scholarship, he brings these events close to us.' Timothy Snyder, The New York Times 'Intelligent, well-informed... intriguing.' The Times 'With the injection of fresh contemporary voices, The Death of Democracy is also a thoughtful reflection of how our time more resembles the Thirties than the Noughties.' Daily Telegraph
