Spectrum Machine Language for the Absolute Beginner

First published in 1982, William Tang's Spectrum Machine Language for the Absolute Beginner is generally considered to be the best introduction to 8-bit machine code programming ever written. With many great game writers crediting this as the book that got them started, there still is no better way to learn the language at the heart of the ZX Spectrum. * * * As the original publisher Melbourne House wrote: If you are frustrated by the limitations of BASIC and want to write faster, more powerful, space-saving programs or subroutines, Spectrum Machine Language for the Absolute Beginner is the book for you. Even with no previous experience of computer languages, you will be able to discover the...

Tang Junyi’s modern Confucianism ranks among the most ambitious philosophical projects in 20th century China. In Tang Junyi: Confucian Philosophy and the Challenge of Modernity, Thomas Fröhlich examines Tang Junyi's intellectual reaction to a time of cataclysmic change marked by two Chinese revolutions (1911 and 1949), two world wars, the Cold War period, rapid modernization in East Asia, and the experience of exile. The present study fundamentally questions widespread interpretations that depict modern Confucianism as essentially traditionalist and nationalistic. Thomas Fröhlich shows that Tang Junyi actually challenges such interpretations with an insightful understanding of the modern individual’s vulnerability, as well as a groundbreaking reinterpretation of Confucianism as the civil-theological foundation for liberal democracy in China.

Pantoums and Other Poems

Pantoums and Other Poems is the result of an exercise the Suncoast Authors and Writers Group partook in writing the Pantoum style of poetry. A group of eight different authors participated in this effort and their work is as varied as the authors themselves. We hope you enjoy the poetry of Rosalie Giansante, Robert Green, Gloria Lynn, Dorothy Ramsdell, Barbara Rhodes, Eric Rhodes, William Tang and Caroline Westerhof.

Fashion, Media, Promotion

In Fashion, Media, Promotion: the new black magic Fashion is linked to its communication networks - involving the reader in the process of selling Fashion in the global marketplace. Fashion's ingenuity in adapting to new means of promotion for digital and print media, websites, advertising, cinema, music and television, is celebrated. Hollywood's role in shaping Fashion's influence is assessed through Audrey Hepburn's persuasive iconography and the impact of the most watched movie of the 20th century: Gone with the Wind. Exceptional designers Coco Chanel, Christian Dior, Rei Kawakubo, Mary Quant, Elsa Schiaparelli, Vivienne Westwood are considered, together with extraordinary innovators Paul Smith, Vidal Sassoon, Lynne Franks. Roland Barthes' Fashion System and Mythologies are viewed as cultural and promotional texts, with revealing insights into the technologies which bring Fashion to mass audiences. Marketing and branding successes are reviewed and Fashion's continuing narrative is illustrated with luminous colour images.

This Special Issue on the Systematics and Phylogeny of Weevils presents 31 new research papers on one of the most diverse and successful groups of animals on Earth, the beetle superfamily Curculionoidea. It was in part inspired to commemorate the extraordinary life and scientific achievements of Guillermo (“Willy”) Kuschel (1918–2017), who shaped this field of science over the last century like no other weevil systematist. The papers in this memorial issue span weevil faunas from all over the globe, including South and Central America, Africa, Europe and the Near East, South-East Asia, New Guinea, Australia and New Zealand. They include major advances on the phylogeny and classificatio...

Under the Shade of Thipaak

Society for Ethnobotany Daniel F. Austin Award The important cultural role of an ancient, endangered plant Under the Shade of Thipaak is the first book to explore the cultural role of cycads, plants that evolved over 250 million years ago and are now critically endangered, in the ancient and modern Mesoamerican and Caribbean worlds. This volume demonstrates how these ancient plants have figured prominently in regional mythologies, rituals, art, and foodways from the Pleistocene-Holocene transition to the present. Contributors discuss the importance of cycads from a variety of disciplinary perspectives, including biology and population genetics, historical ecology, archaeology, art history, l...

Big Data has been much in the news in recent years, and the advantages conferred by the collection and analysis of large datasets in fields such as marketing, medicine and finance have led to claims that almost any real world problem could be solved if sufficient data were available. This is of course a very simplistic view, and the usefulness of collecting, processing and storing large datasets must always be seen in terms of the communication, processing and storage capabilities of the computing platforms available. This book presents papers from the International Research Workshop, Advanced High Performance Computing Systems, held in Cetraro, Italy, in July 2014. The papers selected for p...
