Recent Developments and Applications of Modern Density Functional Theory
The present status of Density Functional Theory (DFT), which has evolved as the main technique for the study of matter at the atomistic level, is described in this volume. Knowing the behavior of atoms and molecules provides a sure avenue for the design of new materials with specific features and properties in many areas of science and technology. A technique based on purely first principles allowing large savings in time and money greatly benefits the specialist or designer of new materials.The range of areas where DFT is applied has expanded and continues to do so. Any area where a molecular system is the center of attention can be studied using DFT.The scope of the 22 chapters in this book amply testifies to this.
The Affairs of Rabbi Flowers
Recently discharged from active military service, a young, inexperienced rabbi named Conrad Flowers seeks a position of service. Its the mid-1970s, a time when people write letters to communicate and hesitate to make long-distance callstoo expensive. The rabbis main source of information is his seminarys newsletter, and he scours the want ads. After several rejections, he applies for the position of rabbi at a temple in Central-Bella. The congregation is hesitant. Flowers is young and arguably unconventional. Even so, they decide to give him a chance, despite varied opinions in regard to his modern ways. Once on the job, Rabbi Flowers realizes military service was easy; his time at war barely compares with the ins and outs of a Jewish congregation, torn between past and present policies. Even within the temple environment, people are still just people. There are arguments, affairs, and scandals, even within the guidance of Gods law. The rabbis values are put to the test as he fights to keep Central-Bella from falling apart. Even he is still just a man, but with the aid of the Lord, he might have a fighting chance to bring peace to the temple and to his own questioning mind.
Hand and Mind
A research subject is shown a cartoon like the 1950 Canary Row--a classic Sylvester and Tweedy Bird caper that features Sylvester climbing up a downspout, swallowing a bowling ball and slamming into a brick wall. After watching the cartoon, the subject is videotaped recounting the story from memory to a listener who has not seen the cartoon. Painstaking analysis of the videotapes revealed that although the research subjects--children as well as adults, some neurologically impaired--represented a wide variety of linguistic groupings, the gestures of people speaking English and a half dozen other languages manifest the same principles. Relying on data from more than ten years of research, McNeill shows that gestures do not simply form a part of what is said and meant but have an impact on thought itself.

Cloth. $75. * This important book traces the history and development of the grand jury from its origins in Saxon England to the author's time. Edwards [1875-1946] was a prominent Philadelphia lawyer who specialized in insurance law. His book won the prestigious Peter Stephen DuPonceau Prize of the Law Academy of Philadelphia in 1904. The Prize Commitee praised the book's "vast amount and valuable information" and observed "not only is [the subject] extremely interesting, (...) it is of great practical importance." Nearly a century later, the book remains an indispensable authority.
