Aqueous-Phase Organometallic Catalysis

Now in its second completely revised and expanded edition. Written by the renowned editors B. Cornils and W. A. Herrmann, this book presents every important aspect of aqueous-phase organometallic catalysis, a method which saves time, waste and money. The large-scale application of this "green" technology in chemical industry clearly underlines its practical use outside of academia. New chapters (for example "Organic Chemistry in Water"), 20% more content and fully updated contributions from a plethora of international authors make this book a "must-have" for everyone working in this field. From the reviews of the first edition: "This overview will be extremely useful for everyone active in this field [...]" Angewandte Chemie "This book is an essential in any chemical research library and I strongly recommend it to all synthetic research and teaching chemists. [...]" The Alchemist "The editors are to be congratulated on assembling such a wide range of contributors who have described the industrial as well as the academic aspects of the subject." Style in the Technical and Tectonic Arts, Or, Practical Aesthetics

The enduring influence of the architect Gottfried Semper (1803-1879) derives primarily from his monumental theoretical foray Der Stil in der technischen und tektonischen KĂ¼nsten (1860-62), here translated into English for the first time. A richly illustrated survey of the technical arts (textiles, ceramics, carpentry, masonry), Semper's analysis of the preconditions of style forever changed the interpretative context for aesthetics, architecture, and art history. Style, Semper believed, should be governed by historical function, cultural affinities, creative free will, and the innate properties of each medium. Thus, in an ambitious attempt to turn nineteenth-century artistic discussion away from historicism, aestheticism, and materialism, Semper developed in Der Stil a complex picture of stylistic change based on scrutiny of specific objects and a remarkable grasp of cultural variety. Harry Francis Mallgrave's introductory essay offers an account of Semper's life and work, a survey of Der Stil, and a fresh consideration of Semper's landmark study and its lasting significance.

Can architecture help us find our place and way in today's complex world? Can it return individuals to a whole, to a world, to a community? Developing Giedion's claim that contemporary architecture's main task is to interpret a way of life valid for our time, philosopher Karsten Harries answers that architecture should serve a common ethos. But if architecture is to meet that task, it first has to free itself from the dominant formalist approach, and get beyond the notion that its purpose is to produce endless variations of the decorated shed. In a series of cogent and balanced arguments, Harries questions the premises on which architects and theorists have long relied—premises which have ...

Vitamins in the prevention of human diseases

This book provides up-to-date knowledge on the role of water and fat soluble vitamins in the prevention of human diseases. The vitamins are essential food constituents with magnificent biological effects therefore, linking our biology to our lifestyle and environment. One-sided nutrition, smoking, alcohol, genetic factors, and even geographical origin interfere with our dietary intake of the vitamins. Therefore, it is not wondering that insufficient vitamin intake can impact our health and contribute significantly to the development of numerous diseases. The book offers expert reviews and judgements on the role of vitamins in our health and the link between vitamins deficiency and disease conditions at different life stages. Having knowledge about the association of vitamins and disease, as well as keeping track on the patients vitamin status has become increasingly important to physicians, clinical chemists, epidemiologists, specialists in nutrition, health professionals, researchers, and students who are interested in this area. Recent development in laboratory methods has helped making many issues in this field quantitative.
