Hidenori Kimura, renowned system and control theorist, turned 60 years of age in November, 2001. To celebrate this memorable occasion, his friends, collaborators, and former students gathered from all over the world and held a symposium in his honor on November 1 and 2, 2001, at the Sanjo Conference Hall at the University of Tokyo. Reflecting his current research interests, the symposium was entitled "Cybernetics in the 21st Century: Information and Complexity in Control Theory," and it drew nearly 150 attendees. This book captures the perspectives on international engineering education of fellows from nine member academies of the Council of Academies of Engineering and Technological Sciences (CAETS). The volume includes papers on the challenges and opportunities facing the education of engineers in the 21st century, and papers relating to globalization and its impact on engineering education worldwide. Started on the inspired initiative of Prof. Alfred Strohmeier back in 1996, and spawned from the annual Ada-Europe conference that had previously run for 16 consecutive years, the International Conference on Reliable Software Technologies celebrated this year its tenth anniversary by going to York, UK, where the ?rst series of technical meetings on Ada were held in the 1970s. Control Systems is studied in the Electrical, Mechanical, Electronics, Chemical , Automobile and Aero Engineering disciplines. The basic principle stems from the feedback control. Systems which need to be controlled are varied and depend on the plant components and their transfer functions. There are Several methods to design and analysis control systems. In this book, the current theoretical background needed for the development of control systems is provided. Apart from the standard methods using Bode, Nyquist and root locus plots, state space techniques are also in use. Discrete time control has assumed more importance with the advent of digital signals. Fuzzy logic is also used in designing controllers, since Edward Mamdani (1971) developed this pioneering control of a steam engine using this technique. Most books on control systems do not deal with the associated components of a system. In this book, two chapters are devoted to the mostly used componenets in various control systems. Process control uses pneumatic controllers which are included in the book.
Presented at this workshop were mathematical models upon which process control is based and the practical applications of this method of control within industry; case studies include examples from the paper and pulp industry, materials industry and the chemical industry, among others. From these presentations emerged a need for further research and development into process control. Containing 19 papers these Proceedings will be a valuable reference work for all those involved in the designing of continuous production processes for industry and for the end user involved in the practical application of process control within their manufacturing process.
The focus of the workshop was on recent advances in the theory, applications and techniques for distributed computer control systems. Topics included: tools and methods for inner layers of DCCS; application papers presenting operational DCCS; the infiltration of true real-time or "time critical" concepts and the emergence of artificial intelligence methods in DCCS applications, leading to novel computer architectures being integrated in computer networks. The book will be of interest not only to those involved in DCCS but also software engineers and distributed computing scientists.
