The Evanston Report
For years to come this official volume will be the single indispensable source book of what happened at the Evanston Assembly. Complete and detailed, the report is well proportioned among description, reports and statistics. A narrative account gives the color and "feel" of the great assembly, highlighting the many memorable moments. Here, too, are the final resolutions, interspersed with pertinent excerpts of the discussion, which give a tape-recording fidelity and greatly enliven the text. The first four chapters of the book give a picture of the World Council as a global enterprise and a going concern as of Aug. 15, 1954, when its Second Assembly opened. The last three chapters of Dr Nichols' book summarize magnificently the thinking of the assembly ... No one will be able fully to appreciate the findings and results of that historic Assembly, whatever they may be, without understanding the background as it is here given. Together on the Way
Meeting every seven years, the assembly is the highest governing body of the World Council of Churches, to which all member churches are entitled to send delegates. The assembly receives reports on the work of the WCC during the preceding period, sets broad guidelines for the next seven years and elects from its membership a central committee to govern the Council until its next assembly. This volume includes the texts of the major addresses and of documents adopted by the delegates at the Eighth Assembly which was held in Harare in 1998. Also contained are summaries of discussions in plenary sessions and the revised WCC constitution and rules, as well as lists of assembly participants, the new central committee, and WCC member churches and associated councils.
