The Pocket Book is for use by doctors nurses and other health workers who are responsible for the care of young children at the first level referral hospitals. This second edition is based on evidence from several WHO updated and published clinical guidelines. It is for use in both inpatient and outpatient care in small hospitals with basic laboratory facilities and essential medicines. In some settings these guidelines can be used in any facilities where sick children are admitted for inpatient care. This handbook gives a detailed explanation of the WHO/UNICEF guidelines for the integrated management of childhood illness (IMCI). The guidelines set out simple and effective methods for the prevention and management of the leading causes of serious illness and mortality in young children. They promote evidence-based assessment and treatment using a syndromic approach that supports the rational, effective and affordable use of drugs. The handbook gives an overview of the IMCI process and includes technical guidelines to assess and classify a sick young infant aged from one week up to two months, and a sick young child aged two months to five years; as well as guidance on how to identify treatment; communicate and counsel; and give follow-up care.
The aim of this document is to help countries develop competency-based educational programmes in adolescent health and development in both pre-service and in-service education. In addition it provides guidance on how to assess and improve the structure content and quality of the adolescent health component of pre-service curricula. By fostering the capacity of health-care providers in adolescent health care and development the document supports the implementation in countries of the Global Standards for Quality Health-Care Services for Adolescents. The ultimate goal of this competency framework is to increase the quality of health-care services provided to adolescents by improving the education of primary health-care providers.
This report is the first major presentation of the international data from the 2001/2002 HBSC survey. The survey covered the physical, emotional and psychological aspects of health, and the influences of the family, schools and peers on young people aged 11, 13 and 15 years in 35 countries and regions in the WHO European Region and North America. The main body of the report gives comprehensive cross-national data on health and well-being, smoking, alcohol consumption, physical activity and sedentary behaviour, eating habits and body image, oral health, bullying and fighting, injuries and, for the first time, cannabis use and sexual health. Other chapters describe the contexts of young peoples health - socioeconomic inequality, puberty, relationships with family, peers, and schools - and discuss the implications of the surveys main findings for the future development of policies and programmes.

This publication is one of three manuals developed by the WHO Regional Office for the Eastern Mediterranean, together with the Islamic Education, Science and Culture Organization and the Islamic Organization for Medical Sciences. Originally published in Arabic, the manuals were regarded as an important addition to the limited range of education materials available for promoting adolescent health and development within the sociocultural values prevailing in countries of the Eastern Mediterranean Region. They are addressed to priority target groups: parents, teachers, health workers, media, adolescent girls and boys, as well as being considered as invaluable tools for advocacy with the political and religious leaders in Member States.
