This collection emphasizes a cross-disciplinary approach to the problem of scale, with essays ranging in subject matter from literature to film, architecture, the plastic arts, philosophy, and scientific and political writing. Its contributors consider a variety of issues provoked by the sudden and pressing shifts in scale brought on by globalization and the era of the Anthropocene, including: the difficulties of defining the concept of scale; the challenges that shifts in scale pose to knowledge formation; the role of scale in mediating individual subjectivity and agency; the barriers to understanding objects existing in scalar realms different from our own; the role of scale in mediating the relationship between humans and the environment; and the nature of power, authority, and democracy at different social scales.

SWEDEN: NEOLIBERALISM AS EFFICIENT POLITICAL SYSTEM FOR SWEDES

egarded as being economically and politically stable, Sweden as one of the North European countries through the overall human mangement personal number system is considered a perfect nordic model. Regardless of the Swedish financial stability, the government during the last two terms (2014-2018 & 2018-2022) was then confronted to the unemployment and security problems. By being aware of these issues for many years, these remain the focal priorities for the Modarates. For an extended bright future, this political party shows the greatest interest in being present, ready and dedicated, at the 2022 votes, and for being elected on behalf of Swedes for these problems to be solved from today onwards. Once Moderates in power in 2022, people and corporate taxes will be lowered once again and with better prerequisite of effective safety. For increasing employment, security and economic growth, voters (natives and foreigners) may make the right choice in casting a vote for the Moderate party on Sunday, September 11, 2022.

Visions of Development in Central Asia

In Visions of Development in Central Asia: Revitalizing the Culture Concept, Noor O’Neill Borbieva reflects on anthropology’s withdrawal from discussions about culture and the parallel rise of the intellectually and politically problematic discourse of “culture matters thinking,” or CMT. CMT asserts that cultures are homogeneous and that the dominant values of its culture determine a state’s socioeconomic and political trajectories. Drawing on practice theory, ecological psychology, complexity science, and poststructuralism, Borbieva urges anthropologists to revisit debates about culture in order to counteract the influence of simplistic formulations such as CMT. Through an examina...

Civic Activism in South Korea

In recent decades, neoliberalism has transformed South Korean society, going far beyond simply restructuring the economy. In response, a number of civic organizations that emerged from the democratization movement with a conscious emphasis on social change have sought to address socioeconomic and political problems caused or aggravated by the neoliberal transformation. Examining how “citizens’ organizations” in South Korea negotiate with the market and neoliberal governance, Seungsook Moon offers new ways to understand the intricate relationship between democracy and neoliberalism as modes of ruling. She provides in-depth qualitative studies of three different types of organizations: a...

About the Book : - Celebratory news features about India's thriving middle-class tells only part of the story of the country's recent economic rise, frequently glossing over the 300 million Indians who live on the margins and struggle to survive under economic liberalization. How do these, cast out of their country's successes, perceive and respond to their position and mobilize against disempowerment? Aradhana Sharma takes up these questions, focusing on the work of an innovative women's programme called Mahila Samakhya, that us part governmental and part non-governmental and strives to empower those rural Indian women who have been pushed aside. Detailing the awkward ideological articulations and paradoxical outcomes of this unique activist-cum-government organisation, Paradoxes of Empowerment fosters a deeper understanding of development and politics in contemporary India.

Anchored in the principles of the free-market economics, 'neoliberalism' has been associated with such different political leaders as Ronald Reagan, Margaret Thatcher, Bill Clinton, Tony Blair, Augusto Pinochet, and Junichiro Koizumi. In its heyday during the late 1990s, neoliberalism emerged as the world's dominant economic paradigm stretching from the Anglo-American heartlands of capitalism to the former communist bloc all the way to the developing regions of the global South. At the dawn of the new century, however, neoliberalism has been discredited as the global economy, built on its principles, has been shaken to its core by a financial calamity not seen since the dark years of the 193...
