This book comprises a series of studies by a number of scholars working on what might broadly be termed the “medieval” period of the history of English, focusing on Old English, Middle English, and the relatively less well-documented period of transition from the former to the latter. The volume brings together contributions not only from a variety of fields, ranging from semantics and syntax to prosody and phonology, but also from different theoretical standpoints, in order to improve the reader’s understanding of the rapid changes that affect the language at this time. The collection of papers here should be of interest to all scholars and students working on Old or Middle English, as well as to students of historical linguistics in general, given that many of the processes and methodological parameters described here will prove to be directly applicable to the study of other periods and of other languages.

This book explores new developments and objectives in translator education, with a focus on metacognitive aspects of both translating and learning to become a translator. The author reports on an exploratory study on translation graduates with particular attention to the effects of metacognitive awareness on their professional development. The data collected show that, despite the growing demand on translation services and advancement of translation technology, there are still a great number of translation graduates who decide not to become professional translators. The findings show a number of reasons why they choose different career paths and discuss the correlations between their self-concept and their professional development, as reflected in their academic performance, career choice, career paths, job satisfaction and perceived success. This volume inscribes itself in the long-standing debate on the status of the “word”. Considering its multi-faceted nature, the authors formulate multiple questions about it and, though no answer to these questions might be exhaustive, each of them brings the reader closer to a more complete understanding of the issue. The eleven authors included here address the nature of the word from a number of perspectives, such as the duality of the word, the status of the word as a meaningful unit, the meaning extension, the lexico-grammar continuum, and the pragmatic functioning of the word, to name but a few. Each of the chapters is a fresh contribution that broadens the perspective traditionally adopted in a discussion of the word and, at the same time, constitutes a sound overview of the issues and approaches taken in such an analysis at the turn of the second to the third millennium. Even though the ability to create witty puns seems to be an inherent skill of humankind, an apt explanation of their linguistic nature has evaded many academic descriptions. This monograph offers a novel conceptual perspective on the creation of meaning observable beneath the surface of wordplay. The rationale for such an approach lies in the fact that language, and hence wordplay, is a cognitive phenomenon which involves some underlying complex mental processes, such as thinking in terms of image schemas, conceptual metaphor and metonymy, or blending, to mention just a few.
