The Road to the Throne

Annotation The stories of the Chinese great emperors reflect the ancient Chinese philosophy, ideology, their wisdom and their ways of administration. Liu Bang is an outstanding example. Rising from a peasant background to become Emperor, he founded the Han Dynasty which lasted for about four hundred years and essentially laid the foundations of China as we know it. Liu Bang (256 BC?195 BC), posthumously called Emperor Gaozu, was a low-ranking functionary in an obscure corner of the realm when he caught the wave of the great uprisings against the Qin Dynasty. First as leader of a local contingent and then as general of larger and larger armies, he eventually overthrew the despotic Qin emperor...

When Liu Bang, the eponymous protagonist of this novel, set out to conquer all under Heaven, he was already 47 years old. A medium-built, foul-mouthed peasant with a reputation as a ne’er-do-well, a womanizer, and a drunkard, who, though literate, never cared much about literature, he seemed to have a slim chance at success at a time when all the heroes in the realm contended for power and dominance. Against all odds, he defeated his rivals to found the Han dynasty, and quelled the numerous rebellions that challenged his rule. 本書以史實與故事兼容之手法,描述歷史人物劉邦以平民出身,卻能扭轉情勢爭奪天下的經過。

Considered a representative figure of the post-1970s Chinese poets, Yu Xiang is part of a new generation of contemporary Chinese poets following in the footsteps of the "Obscure" (otherwise known as "Misty") poets and the post-"Obscure" writers. If identification is indeed a shadow act of figuration, Yu Xiang does not care for any post-age or post-modern label. Her response toward specific social or political realities in China during these recent years differ from her predecessors' during their respective epochs, in the sense that she does not necessarily depict them from an oblique stance. She does not merely dwell in ambiguities, contradictions and ambivalence. Nor does she present her wo...

Conceptual artist He Xiangyu (*1986, China) has developed projects that take as their subject the goods and products that symbolize the mass production and consumption of the world while evoking the state of contemporary Chinese society. For his Coca-Cola Project, (2009 - 2012), the artist spent over a year simmering down a 127-ton batch of Coca-Cola, and transformed the black, charcoal-like substance that was extracted from this process into an apocalyptic installation. The Lemon Project, started in 2016, turns towards the practice of scientifi c research to produce an encyclopedic collection of the multitude of meanings and functions of lemons and the color yellow, leading him to immerse himself in the abyss of historical, psychological, medical, and cultural meanings associated with the color yellow. The book in a Japanese binding includes essays on the color yellow. On the inside of the uncut pages are more than 500 of He Xiangyu`s drawings entitled "Research on Yellow."

Han Xin's Challenge

"The death of China's first emperor in 210 BCE initiated a brutal power struggle between Xiang Yu, Hegemon-King of Western Chu, and Liu Bang, later founder of the Han dynasty; the lowly Han Xin also strove for advancement. For over 2,000 years, the resulting story has been celebrated in China. Even today its main protagonists are household names. This is an epic tale of courage and cowardice, honour and treachery, acted out by lords, officials and soldiers, mothers, wives and concubines, and has inspired great works of literature, performance and the arts. It is surprising, then, that only recently was a full version of this narrative translated into English by the same authors. A massive wo...
