Cognition and Interaction: From Computers to Smart Objects and Autonomous Agents

Cognitive sciences have been involved under numerous accounts to explain how humans interact with technology, as well as to design technological instruments tailored to human needs. As technological advancements in fields like wearable and ubiquitous computing, virtual reality, robotics and artificial intelligence are presenting novel modalities for interacting with technology, there are opportunities for deepening, exploring, and even rethinking the theoretical foundations of human technology use. This volume entitled “Cognition and Interaction: From Computers to Smart Objects and Autonomous Agents” is a collection of articles on the impacts that novel 3 September Frontiers in Psycholog...

Language Development in the Digital Age

The digital age is changing our children’s lives and childhood dramatically. New technologies transform the way people interact with each other, the way stories are shared and distributed, and the way reality is presented and perceived. Parents experience that toddlers can handle tablets and apps with a level of sophistication the children’s grandparents can only envy. The question of how the ecology of the child affects the acquisition of competencies and skills has been approached from different angles in different disciplines. In linguistics, psychology and neuroscience, the central question addressed concerns the specific role of exposure to language. Two influential types of theory ...

Multimodal Brain Image Analysis and Mathematical Foundations of Computational Anatomy

This book constitutes the refereed joint proceedings of the 4th International Workshop on Multimodal Brain Image Analysis, MBAI 2019, and the 7th International Workshop on Mathematical Foundations of Computational Anatomy, MFCA 2019, held in conjunction with the 22nd International Conference on Medical Imaging and Computer-Assisted Intervention, MICCAI 2019, in Shenzhen, China, in October 2019. The 16 full papers presented at MBAI 2019 and the 7 full papers presented at MFCA 2019 were carefully reviewed and selected. The MBAI papers intend to move forward the state of the art in multimodal brain image analysis, in terms of analysis methodologies, algorithms, software systems, validation approaches, benchmark datasets, neuroscience, and clinical applications. The MFCA papers are devoted to statistical and geometrical methods for modeling the variability of biological shapes. The goal is to foster the interactions between the mathematical community around shapes and the MICCAI community around computational anatomy applications.

Addictions are invisible prisons that trap the mind and body, creating a cycle of dependency and suffering. This book not only explores chemical and behavioral addictions but also provides practical tools for overcoming them. Through strategies such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Mindfulness, and self-reflection, it encourages readers to take control of their lives and transform compulsive patterns into conscious and meaningful actions. Delving into how dopamine and neurological mechanisms reinforce these behaviors, it also explains how they can be reversed. With a holistic approach, including family, community, and professional support, each chapter guides the reader toward recovery, addressing topics such as stress, relapses, and social stigma. It’s a call to action to abandon self-judgment, build resilience, and find renewed purpose, breaking free from the chains of addiction.
