China’s rise and stepped-up involvement in Southeast Asia have prompted a blend of anticipation and unease among its smaller neighbors. The stunning growth of China has yanked up the region’s economies, but its militarization of the South China Sea and dam building on the Mekong River has nations wary about Beijing’s outsized ambitions. Southeast Asians long felt relatively secure, relying on the United States as a security hedge, but that confidence began to slip after the Trump administration launched a trade war with China and questioned the usefulness of traditional alliances. This compelling book provides a snapshot of ten countries in Southeast Asia by exploring their diverse experiences with China and how this impacts their perceptions of Beijing’s actions and its long-term political, economic, military, and “soft power” goals in the region.

This comparative study of the resistance behavior between the Palestinians and Chinese Uyghurs delineates the commonalities of the two case studies in terms of circumstances and resistance behavior, while creating its research puzzle from their differences of the latter. The research question asks what explains the variation in resistance behavior between the two groups given their similarities. The study analyses the commonalities and differences of resistance behavior with regards to a „resistance spectrum”, starting with ‘frames’ („How is the conflict framed?”), continuing with an investigation of the non-violent forms of action-based resistance (poetry, songs, protests, etc.), concluding with an analysis of the violent forms of resistance. The study relies upon four different theories in its hypotheses’ development in order to test different variables for explaining the research puzzle.

We are delighted to announce a thematic issue focused on the molecular epidemiology of pathogens and vectors of disease. In the last decades, genomics has revolutionized many areas of science, technology, and health by enlightening our understanding of the intricate molecular biology of pathogens and vectors. Despite these advances viral, bacterial, fungal, and parasitic pathogens still cause huge economic and health losses around the world. Moreover, there is compelling evidence of an expansion of their impact linked to global warming, anthropogenic activities and/or limitations in control strategies. Vectored pathogens are also highly relevant, causing diseases with severe morbidity and mortality such as malaria, dengue fever and schistosomiasis. The expanding geographical reach of vectors due to adaptation and/or climate change is leading to outbreaks in previously unaffected areas. Substantial challenges remain to track and trace pathogens and vectors through molecular signatures in order to understand their impact to human and animal health in different environments.

This Special Issue on molecular genetics, genomics, and biotechnology in crop plant breeding seeks to encourage the use of the tools currently available. It features nine research papers that address quality traits, grain yield, and mutations by exploring cytoplasmic male sterility, the delicate control of flowering in rice, the removal of anti-nutritional factors, the use and development of new technologies for non-model species marker technology, site-directed mutagenesis and GMO regulation, genomics selection and genome-wide association studies, how to cope with abiotic stress, and an exploration of fruit trees adapted to harsh environments for breeding purposes.
