The Chinese Filmography
From A to Z, Abandon Superstitions (1958; Po Chu Mi Xing in Chinese) to Zuo Wenjun and Sima Xiangru (1984; Zuo Wen Jun Ahe Si Ma Xiang Ru), this comprehensive reference work provides filmographic data on 2,444 Chinese features released since the formation of the People's Republic of China. The films reflect the shifting dynamics of the Chinese film industry, from sweeping epics to unabashedly political docudramas, although straight documentaries are excluded from the current work. The entries include the title in English, the Chinese title (in Pinyin romanization with each syllable noted separately for clarity), year of release, studio, technical information (e.g., black and white or color, letterboxed or widescreen), length, technical credits, literary source (when applicable), cast, plot summary, and awards won.

Advances in Biometric Person Authentication
This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the International Workshop on Biometric Recognition Systems, IWBRS 2005, held in Beijing, China in October 2005 within the scope of ICCV 2005, the International Conference on Computer Vision. This workshop combines the annual Chinese Conference on Biometric Recognition (Sinobiometrics 2005). The 32 revised full papers were carefully reviewed and selected from 130 submissions. The papers address the problems of automatic and reliable authentication of individuals in face, iris, fingerprint, palmprint, speaker, writing and other biometrics, and contribute new ideas to research and development of reliable and practical solutions for biometric authentication.

Volume two of Marylin Rhie’s widely acclaimed and formative multi-volume work presents a comprehensive, scholarly and detailed study of the Buddhist art of China and Central Asia from 316-439 A.D. during the formative early periods of Buddhism in the Eastern Chin and Sixteen Kingdoms Period. Using texts translated from the Chinese together with stylistic and technical analyses, the chronology and sources of the art are more clearly defined than in previous studies for the regions of South and North China (other than Kansu) and the important sites of Tumshuk, Kucha and Karashahr on the Northern Silk Route in eastern Central Asia. Furthermore, by incorporating extensive religious and historical materials, this work not only contributes to clarifying the regional characteristics of the art, but also offers new insights into the broader, interregional relationships of this politically fragmented period.

Real Life in China at the Height of Empire
Toward the end of the eighteenth century Ji Xiaolan, widely regarded as the most eminent scholar and foremost wit of his age, published five collections of anecdotes and discourses centring on the interaction between the mundane and spirit worlds, but also including purely earthly life stories and happenings. Some items represent Ji's own thought and experiences, but the majority were supplied by others, Ji acting only as recorder. Settings range socially from the milieux of peasants, servants and merchants to those of governors and ministers, and geographically extend to the far reaches of the Qing empire. Contents may dwell on comedy or tragedy, cruelty or kindness, corruption or integrity, erudition or ignorance, credulity or scepticism; several items borrow ghost stories to satirize men and manners; some straightforwardly examine current beliefs and practices. Taken together, this miscellany presents a picture of the contemporary world unmatched in its scope and variety of perspectives, and in this way comes nearer to depicting "real life" than novels or institutional histories.

Plant Proteomic Research 3.0
The Special Issue “Plant Proteomics 3.0” was conceived in an attempt to address the recent advancements in as well as limitations of current proteomic techniques and their diverse applications to attain new insights into plant molecular responses to various biotic and abiotic stressors and the molecular bases of other processes. Proteomics’ focus is also related to translational purposes, including food traceability and allergen detection.
