Functional carbohydrates have low or moderate energy and health-promoting effects. They are greatly favored in a variety of areas, such as food, pharmaceuticals, feed, and agriculture. The low-cost and high-yield manufacturing of functional carbohydrates is a prerequisite for their widespread application. Compared to extraction and chemical methods, biomanufacture dominates the production of functional carbohydrates, and there have been continuous innovations and technological progress over the last decades. Biomanufacture of Functional Carbohydrates provides the systemic introduction of biomanufacture of ten functional carbohydrates. Each chapter introduces the function and application of a...

(Pushing) the Limits of Neuroplasticity Induced by Adult Language Acquisition

Most adults attempt to learn a second or even third language at some point in their life. Since language exposure is one of the most intense cognitive training regimes one can encounter, it is not surprising that previous research has shown that multilingualism can induce profound change in the brain or ‘neuroplasticity’.What remains unclear is the scope of such adult language learning induced neuroplasticity. In other words, much is yet to be investigated about the factors that limit or promote adult language learning induced neuroplasticity. On the one hand, the present research topic discusses research that sheds light on neural mechanisms that limit adult language learning induced ne...

The Neurocognition of Language Production

Over the last decades neuroscience has passed beyond mere “phrenology” and “erpology” and has become an important tool for investigating the spatial, temporal and functional brain dynamics underlying human behavior. In this Special Issue we would like to give a broad overview of recent significant contributions that neuroscientific research has provided to one of the most practiced psychomotor skills unique to humans, namely language production. Physiological studies in language production have not been as extensive compared to many other areas of human cognition and have just currently begun to generate important evidence for uncovering the cognitive mechanisms behind our ability to...

The Political Brain

We have politics on our mind—or, rather, we have politics in different parts of our brains. In this path-breaking study, Matt Qvortrup takes the reader on a whistle stop tour through the fascinating, and sometimes frightening, world of neuropolitics; the discipline that combines neuroscience and politics, and is even being used to win elections. Putting the 'science' back into political science, The Political Brain shows how fMRI-scans can identify differences between Liberals and Conservatives, can predict our behaviour with sometimes greater accuracy than surveys, and can explain the biology of uprisings, revolutions, and wars. Not merely a study of empirical evidence, the book shows how the philosophical theories of, among others, Plato, Aristotle, and Spinoza can be supported by brain scans. Along the way, it also provides an overview of the state-of-the-art knowledge of the organ that shapes our politics. The book shows that if we rely on evolutionary primitive parts of the midbrain—those engaged when we succumb to polarised politics—we stand in danger of squandering the gains we made through the last eight million years.

Translation and Language Teaching

Drawing upon convergences between translation studies and foreign and second language (L2) didactics that have emerged as a result of recent research, this volume continues the dialogue between the two disciplines by allowing for epistemological two-way traffic, marrying established, yet so far unrelated or under-researched, conceptual approaches, and disseminating innovative scientific evidence from different continents. A unique feature of the volume is the sub-section presenting the most recent empirical studies in the development of linguistic and other professional competences for translators, with suggestions for re(de)fining translation curricula. The contributors to this volume include representatives of various spheres, including academics, researchers and practitioners. Their underlying theoretical and empirical research is informed by multiple perspectives: linguistics, didactics, and translation-related. This book shows how integrating insights from translation studies into language teaching and vice versa can effectively respond to the challenges of contemporary language and translator teaching and training.

Advances and Challenges in Stroke Therapy: A Regenerative Prospective, volume II

This Research Topic is the second volume of Research Topic "Advances and Challenges in Stroke Therapy: A Regenerative Prospective". Please see the first volume here. Stroke is the 3rd leading cause of human death and the first major cause of long-term disability worldwide. Stroke represents an enormous socioeconomic burden, thus, highlighting the urgent need for effective treatments. Thrombolysis with recombinant tissue plasminogen activator (rtPA) is the only FDA-approved therapy to re-establish cerebral blood flow. However, the non-availability of rtPA, and because of the increased risk of haemorrhage beyond 4.5 h post-stroke, only a few stroke patients (1-2%) get to benefit from it. Apart from rtPA, the current treatment therapies are far from being the ideal solution, emphasizing the urgent need for alternative strategies for replacing damaged tissue.
