Biomarkers and Immunotherapy of Hepatic-Biliary-Pancreatic Cancers
Hepatic-biliary-pancreatic cancers, mainly including hepatocellular carcinoma, cholangiocarcinoma, gallbladder cancer, are highly aggressive malignancies with few treatment options and poor prognoses. Effects of the traditional systemic treatments such as chemotherapy and radiotherapy, are quite limited to hepatic-biliary-pancreatic cancers. For the patients who suffer from hepatic-biliary-pancreatic cancer and lose the opportunity of radical surgery, few targeted drugs are available. Even for the drugs in clinical trial, potential drug targets and prognostic biomarkers for hepatic-biliary-pancreatic cancer are less studied compared to other common cancers such as lung cancer. Prognostic biomarker study is the initiation to explore new drug targets and revelation of the underlying mechanisms of tumor progression.

Pharmaceutical Strategies to Prevent, Treat, and Recover: Advances and Challenges in Ischemic Stroke and Hemorrhagic Stroke
Stroke is one of the leading causes of death and disability worldwide. Among them, ischemic stroke is attributed to an abrupt blockage of blood flow to brain, while hemorrhagic stroke is caused by bleeding into brain. The principal aim of stroke therapy is to decrease mortality and reduce persistent neurologic injury and long-term disability. It also targets to prevent complications and recurrence after stroke as well as minimize the brain function loss caused by the cerebral damage. Fortunately, many strokes could be prevented through healthy lifestyle changes and controlling stroke risk factors, such as cigarette or tobacco smoking, high blood pressure, diabetes, and heart disease. Carotid endarterectomy and stenting of the cervical and intracranial vessels may help reduce recurrent stroke in some cases. Advanced treatments and rehabilitation are helping many stroke patients return to society and their families.
The Impact of Demographics on Productivity and Inflation in Japan
Is Japan’s aging and, more recently, declining population hampering growth and reflation efforts? Exploiting demographic and economic variation in prefectural data between 1990 and 2007, we find that aging of the working age population has had a significant negative impact on total factor productivity. Moreover, prefectures that aged at a faster pace experienced lower overall inflation, while prefectures with higher population growth experienced higher inflation. The results give strong support to the notion that demographic headwinds can have a non-trivial impact on total factor productivity and deflationary pressures.
Challenges and Current Research Status of Vertigo/Vestibular Diseases
Vertigo or vestibular disorders have become a common handicap across the globe, which poses a great burden on health care resources. Vertigo is not a disease entity per se, but rather a leading symptom of many etiologically different diseases. These conditions include dysfunction of the vestibular system, both peripheral (inner ear, vestibular nerve) and central (brainstem, cerebellum), functional dizziness, and diseases of other causes, including blood pressure regulation disorders, such as orthostatic dizziness, and adverse drug reactions. Previous studies demonstrated that vestibular disorders might be a modifiable condition and a possible target for secondary prevention of cognitive impairment due to aging, dementia, social isolation, late-life depression, frailty, and increased risk of mortality.
