Stress is an abnormal response of the organism to external environmental stimuli. In the process of breeding production, animals will show various stress reactions due to changes in their physiological functions, environmental conditions, and management levels. Transportation, high temperature, cold, and other stressors could induce protective reactions in the animal body, showing obvious physiological metabolic disorders and non-specific immune dysfunction, disrupting the physiological processes of nutrient metabolism, digestion and absorption, and immune defense, and ultimately leading to a decrease in production performance and feed conversion rate.
Known as the “roof of the world,” the Tibetan Plateau is the highest and largest plateau on Earth. Tibetan Plateau hosts several mountain ecosystems characterized by high elevations, cold conditions, and a wide range in water availability. Its unique physical and geographical environment includes ecosystems typical for alpine regions, classified as alpine grasslands, which account for 50-70% of the total land area of the Tibetan plateau. Most of these grasslands contain fragile tundra-like environments which are seriously affected by anthropogenic modifications and whose restoration presents a challenge. These natural grassland types include alpine deserts, alpine steppes, alpine meadows, and alpine swamp meadows along precipitation gradients, as well as the transition types between them. Alpine grasslands remain subject to severe degradation by multiple factors, mainly overgrazing and climate warming. As a result, grasslands exhibit a decreased capacity to support biodiversity and complexity, and more generally, ecosystem functions. Therefore, these changes also affect social and recreational activities and restrict access to clean water and food by local communities.
It is estimated that at least 60% of persons dying have a prolonged advanced illness. The need for palliative and end-of-life care will increase due to the rapidly aging world population and the increase of multiple long-term conditions. For these reasons, palliative care is an integral part of public health and public health strategies. Palliative care as holistic person-centered care and has played a critical role in the recent public health emergency of the COVID-19 pandemic. There is a close association between public health, health promotion, and palliative care, and this research topic will highlight this association. Through a series of multi-disciplinary articles, we will explore public health in the context of life-limiting illnesses contributing to shaping person-centered care, including palliative, end-of-life, and rehabilitation. This research topic will discuss advanced and life-limiting illness as a public health challenge and explore the role of palliative and end-of-life care including rehabilitation in shaping person-centered care.
