Functional Nucleic Acid Based Biosensors for Food Safety Detection

This book highlights the development of a functional nucleic acid based biosensor detection method in the context of food safety. Although there have been major advances in food processing technology in both developed and developing countries, food safety assurance systems are generally becoming more stringent, in response to growing (both real and perceived) food safety problems. These problems are due in part to foodborne microorganisms, heavy metals, and small chemical molecules (biological toxins, pesticide residues, and veterinary drug residues), etc. In addition, the nucleic acid biomarkers (DNA methylation, microRNA, and circRNA) induced by these risk factors are also closely related to food safety. Accordingly, this book offers a brief guide to targets and strategies in functional nucleic acid based biosensors for food safety detection. Divided into several chapters that focus on various respective targets, it will be a valuable resource for students and researchers in the fields of biosensor detection, food science etc.

Transcriptional Regulation of Flesh Fruit Development and Ripening

Transcriptional Regulation of Flesh Fruit Development and Ripening Understand the critical factors in fruit development with this up-to-date guide Fruit is an essential part of the human diet, and fruit production has never been more central to global human nutrition and public health. Fruit ripening is a vital stage in the emergence of nutrient-rich food, and modifications to the fruit development process can impact flavor, texture, nutritional value, and more. The process of ripening is controlled by nearly sixty transcription factors (TFs), a proper understanding of which is therefore crucial to regulating fruit quality and competing in the global food marketplace. Transcriptional Regulat...

Food Safety in China

From contaminated infant formula to a spate of all-too familiar headlines in recent years, food safety has emerged as one of the harsher realities behind China's economic miracle. Tainted beef, horse meat and dioxin outbreaks in the western world have also put food safety in the global spotlight. Food Safety in China: Science, Technology, Management and Regulation presents a comprehensive overview of the history and current state of food safety in China, along with emerging regulatory trends and the likely future needs of the country. Although the focus is on China, global perspectives are presented in the chapters and 33 of the 99 authors are from outside of China. Timely and illuminating, this book offers invaluable insights into our understanding of a critical link in the increasingly globalized complex food supply chain of today's world.

Advanced Technology in Teaching

2012 International Conference on Teaching and Computational Science (ICTCS 2012) is held on April 1-2, 2012, Macao. This volume contains 120 selected papers presented at 2012 International Conference on Teaching and Computational Science (ICTCS 2012), which is to bring together researchers working in many different areas of teaching and computational Science to foster international collaborations and exchange of new ideas. This volume book can be divided into two sections on the basis of the classification of manuscripts considered. The first section deals with teaching. The second section of this volume consists of computational Science. We hope that all the papers here published can benefit you in the related researching fields.

Heterogeneity in Breast Cancer: Clinical and Therapeutic Implications

Breast cancer is a highly heterogeneous disease. Despite advances in early detection and treatment, breast cancer (BC) is the leading cause of cancer death in women worldwide. Heterogeneity negatively affects a patient’s prognosis, treatment sensitivity, and clinical outcome. In particular, the development of drug resistance mechanisms and the failure of anticancer drugs (initially or subsequently) could lie in the heterogeneity among BC patients and tumors. The major international guidelines have adopted an immunophenotypic sub-classification of BC to maximize patient eligibility for personalized therapy but do not take into account the extreme diversity existing between breast tumors (intratumor heterogeneity).
