The Aegean Maritime Disputes and International Law
This key work analyses the disputes between Greece and Turkey as to their respective rights in the Aegean Sea, paying particular attention to the claims regarding territorial waters, the continental shelf, and the yet to be declared exclusive maritime zones in the area. While many earlier studies have concentrated on political factors, this study provides an exhaustive analysis of the relevant principles of international law in general and rules and principles of maritime law in particular, identifying the legal principles appropriate to the settlement of the Aegean dispute. With this regard, it makes a detailed examination of all the related aspects of the Aegean Sea and its islands, as well as the legal arguments of Greece and Turkey on the disputes concerned. It also clarifies the prospects for settling the dispute on the basis of international law, either by the two parties involved, or by the intervention of a third party such as the International Court of Justice. As such, it offers an important study of a particular problem, but one that can be used as a case study for other international disagreements.

Conflict Areas in the Balkans
The situation in the Balkans, such as the solution to the status of Kosovo, is currently the largest international political problem in Europe, with the potential to burst into a world crisis regarding the Eastern - Western relations. On the other hand, a successful solution to the problem in the Balkans could serve as a model for solving the Muslim - Christian tensions elsewhere in the world. It is the intention of this book to contribute proposals for solutions to the problems of Balkans. The starting principle for the solutions to be effective is that they should come in a natural way from the people below and should not be enforced by the political elites from above. Based on self-determination of nations as a starting principle, they should encourage intra-regional cooperation among the regional entities (economic, cultural, sport, as a basis for political, social understanding and cooperation); secondly, accelerate their economic, political and social development and thirdly, as a final step enable the inclusion of the Balkan countries into the European Union.

The United Nations has been facing reform proposals ever since its inception in 1945. Lengthy discussions and negotiations on the proposals have taken place in the General Assembly, but only a handful of them were ever approved. The majority of such proposals, especially touching on the composition and power of the UNSC members, remained academic brainstorming. This does not, by any means, downgrade the significance of the efforts as the UN system fails dramatically in preventing some serious global problems of protecting peace and security, as well as preventing systematic human rights violations and hunger globally. Recent years have witnessed increasing demands toward reforming the UN following striking failures, especially in protecting peace and security. This book brings together some analyses of UN reform proposals in general and some proposals that come from the states that form regional groups to reflect their commonalities and communalities in the process.
Freedom of Navigation in the Exclusive Economic Zone
This book looks into ship-source pollution from an EU perspective and in view of recent far-reaching initiatives undertaken by this regional organization. These constitute the first regional approach with respect to ship-source pollution in the context of the freedom of navigation in the exclusive economic zone where criminalization beyond generally accepted international standards is arguably envisaged. With respect to the freedom of navigation of other States in this exclusive economic zone, this book confirms that it is closely related to, and at times serves as a prerequisite for, the exercise of their other freedoms and lawful uses of the sea therein, and that any impact on the freedom of navigation of other States in the exclusive economic zone may affect their other freedoms or associated rights.
Marine Protected Areas Network in the South China Sea
The once pristine and rich marine environment of the South China Sea is degrading at an alarming rate due to the rapid socioeconomic development of the region. Despite this, and due mainly to complicated sovereignty and maritime disputes, coastal States have not been able to develop effective regional cooperation to safeguard the shared marine environment. Marine Protected Areas Network in the South China Sea discusses legal and political measures to support the development of a network of marine protected areas in the South China Sea. Such a network, if properly developed, would not only help to protect the marine environment and resources of the region but also contribute to decreasing the tension among its coastal States. These measures are suggested in accordance with international law, based on the specific geopolitical context of the South China Sea region and take into consideration experiences in developing regional networks of marine protected areas from other marine regions.
