John Rebus spent his life as a cop putting Edinburgh's most deadly criminals behind bars. Now having been convicted of a homicide, he's joined them… A convict is brutally murdered in his locked cell deep in the heart of Scotland’s most infamous prison. Sleeping in a cell across the floor lies John Rebus, the equally notorious detective. Stripped of his badge and estranged from his police family, he is now fighting for his own life - protected by an old nemesis but always one wrong move away from the shank. As new allies and old enemies circle, and the days and nights bleed into each other, even this legendary figure struggles to keep his head. They say old habits die hard, though. The death stirs Rebus’s deductive - and manipulative - impulses, setting off a domino-chain of scheming criminals, corrupt prison guards and perhaps only one or two good souls who may see it all through. But how do you find a killer in a place full of them?
No legal system in the world has aroused as much public interest as Sharia. However, the discourse around Sharia law is largely focussed on its development and the theories, principles and rules that inform it. Less attention has been given to studying the consequences of its operation, particularly in the area of Islamic criminal law. Even fewer studies explore the actual practice of Islamic criminal law in contemporary societies. This book aims to fill these gaps in our understanding of Sharia law in practice. It deals specifically with the consequences of enforcing Islamic criminal law in Pakistan, providing an in-depth and critical analysis of the application of the Islamic law of Qisas and Diyat (retribution and blood money) in the Muslim world today. The empirical evidence adduced more broadly demonstrates the complications of applying traditional Sharia in a modern state.

Games within Games was not written with any game plan in mind but was rather conceived to facilitate the examination of a key area of management, leadership and often the lack of it, with an ease of approachability which is at once entertaining and enlightening. It was, indeed, a challenge to balance the two. The book is the happy result of the author’s three and half decades of service with the Government of India which accorded him with the opportunity to be with all manner of bosses: the good, the bad and the ugly. They all mattered, in their own way, their presence was sometimes commanding, sometimes demanding and sometimes reminding. They all served a purpose to exemplify themselves, some as leaders with a difference and others with an indifference. The book, hopefully, will serve its purpose of learning with laughter which, regretfully, not many management books manage to achieve. There’s some joy in sacrificing oneself at the altar of humour rather than being the proverbial sacrificial lamb.
