L'idea di questo volume è nata a Buenos Aires nel giugno 2009. Quando arrivai a Buenos Aires era domenica ed era giorno elettorale. La città era in fermento e si respirava una atmosfera particolare, un misto di attesa e di euforia sempre accompagnata da quel senso di rassegnazione e nostalgia che si respira a Buenos Aires. Il giorno dopo, il lunedì 29 giugno i medici della UBA (Universidad de Buenos Aires), membri della équipe di ricerca con cui sarei dovuta andare nel Chaco, mi dissero che non si partiva più, che non sarei potuta nemmeno andare a Córdoba dove dovevo tenere un seminario. Nel giro di poche ore sarebbe scoppiata l'emergenza sanitaria per l'influenza suina. Avrebbero sospeso la possibilità di viaggiare al nord e al sud del paese e di lì a pochi giorni anche le università, i musei, i cinema ed i teatri avrebbero chiuso o limitato gli accessi.
