The present monograph is a state-of-art survey of the geometry of matrices whose study was initiated by L K Hua in the forties. The geometry of rectangular matrices, of alternate matrices, of symmetric matrices, and of hermitian matrices over a division ring or a field are studied in detail. The author's recent results on geometry of symmetric matrices and of hermitian matrices are included. A chapter on linear algebra over a division ring and one on affine and projective geometry over a division ring are also included. The book is clearly written so that graduate students and third or fourth year undergraduate students in mathematics can read it without difficulty.
Hsio-Fu Tuan is a Chinese mathematician who has made important contributions to the theories of both finite groups and Lie groups. He has also had a great influence on the development of algebra, and particularly group theory in China. The present volume consists of a collection of essays on various aspects of group theory written by some of his former students and colleagues in honour of his 80th birthday. The papers contain the main general results, as well as recent ones, on certain topics within this discipline. The chief editor, Zhe-Xian Wan, is a leading algebraist in China.

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the Third International Workshop on Coding and Cryptology, IWCC 2011, held in Qingdao, China, May 30-June 3, 2011. The 19 revised full technical papers are contributed by the invited speakers of the workshop. The papers were carefully reviewed and cover a broad range of foundational and methodological as well as applicative issues in coding and cryptology, as well as related areas such as combinatorics.
In recent years quaternary codes have attracted the attention of the coding community as several notorious binary nonlinear codes containing more codewords than any known linear codes were found to be binary images under the Gray map of linear codes over Z 4 This discovery opens the way for a broader study of quaternary codes, which constitute a rapidly growing area of coding theory. This book is based on the author's lectures in Xi'an, China and Lurid, Sweden and covets the most recent developments of this theory.
It is known that linear algebra is a useful tool in engineering but, since the middle of this century, abstract linear algebra has also found more and more applications. For instance, finite fields play a prominent role in coding theory and ring theory is the foundation of linear systems over rings. Both linear and abstract algebra should now be in the curriculum of undergraduate engineering students. This introductory book on algebra aims to provide the basic material for such a course. It also constitutes a solid algebraic basis for the non-specialists who wish to become specialists in, for example, coding theory, cryptography and linear systems theory.
This monograph provides a survey of classical groups over finite fields. Many important results, appearing for the first time in book-form, are clearly presented. Most of them have been obtained by the author and students under his supervision.
During his lifetime, L. K. Hua played a leading role in and exerted a great influence upon the development in China of modern mathematics, both pure and applied. His mathematical career began in 1931 at Tsinghua University where he continued as a professor for many years. Hua made many significant contributions to number theory, algebra, geometry, complex analysis, numerical analysis, and operations research. In particular, he initiated the study of classical groups in China and developed new matrix methods which, as applied by him as well as his followers, were instrumental in the successful attack of many problems. To honor his memory, a joint China-U.S. conference on Classical Groups and Related Topics was held at Tsinghua University in Beijing in May 1987. This volume represents the proceedings of that conference and contains both survey articles and research papers focusing on classical groups and closely related topics.
Numbers, Information and Complexity is a collection of about 50 articles in honour of Rudolf Ahlswede. His main areas of research are represented in the three sections, `Numbers and Combinations', `Information Theory (Channels and Networks, Combinatorial and Algebraic Coding, Cryptology, with the related fields Data Compression, Entropy Theory, Symbolic Dynamics, Probability and Statistics)', and `Complexity'. Special attention was paid to the interplay between the fields. Surveys on topics of current interest are included as well as new research results. The book features surveys on Combinatorics about topics such as intersection theorems, which are not yet covered in textbooks, several contributions by leading experts in data compression, and relations to Natural Sciences are discussed.
