Hanford Stone carries with him a past as heavy as his name implies when he arrives in Beaux Bridge, Ohio, he a modern day flimflam man for Nearly Diamond Corporation, an energy company hoping to sell its high-sulfur coal. No one senses his burden, given his bright faade and dynamic demeanor. Surely not Hasten Edmond whose beauty, unequalled in the town, is emphasized by ebony-marbled eyes and shaft-dark mane which hints of how her persona plays the light of reflection at once with the clarity of diamond and with the carbon black of coal. She contrives to possess Hanford as she has every man of her desire, and is stunned when she finds her only competition ever in the personas of Allison, Grace, and Maryeach woman with varying allures, all unachievable by Hastenand all sought by a man whose search for love demands more than beauty and wit. She sees Hanford as a contemporary in every way, but cannot fathom that part of him from a different timescape, tradition, sense of self. Nor can Hanford, a man in flight and in denialeven as he succumbs to the abundance of love he helps Hasten find within herself.

Phipp Kearney is a college professor who should have been a criminal. He, who grew up in a torture chamber hidden behind a middle class front door, suffers with a ruinous personality. His life is a waiting room for his childhood to sneak into the present and destroy him. The loss of his wife and his university position loom before him. Yet he neither understands why these losses are imminent nor recognizes the troubles that precipitated them. In a bitter-end effort, his wife lures him into a therapy called Memory Work. He accedes, and begrudgingly begins to write. In a cabin upon Georgias mighty Coosa River, with neighbors out of the book of the too familiar, he finds that past and present merge into a lethal profile of himself. Still, with a sense of stoicism and raillery, he shares with the reader his memories of being stripped of ego, self-esteem, spontaneity, creativity, and the ability to love, along the road toward disconnectedness as an adult. Infidelity, bigotry, suicide, and the masks of battery and abuse, scar the landscape over which Phipp travels in his search to unravel his pasta twelve year old boy and timid old man his most potent therapists.

The Book Beulah, Georgia, 1951, the leather back seat of a tulip-yellow Studebakertherefrom springs the story of four romances from four generations so impassioned as to change lives and to endure lifetimes; indeed, to endure still; to repeat, blossom, succeed, as everyone, everywhere, awaits Just Another Georgia Romance. This short novel allows no single of its four love stories to stand alone, though each is so singular, so intensely personal. The central onebegotten by the other threetells of Natalie Merrywell and Blake Davis who meet upon the floor of the Merrywell Tobacco Auction Warehouse one sweltering August afternoon. They do not remotely know the secrets they carry as they fall more deeply in love from the moment of their first encounter to novels very end. Nonetheless, neither the Montagues nor the Capulets of Shakespeares pen hold an edge up on the aversion the Merrywell and Davis families experience when they discover the love between their handsome and talented offspring. They fail to realize that their mandate to end this modern-day relationship comes much too late; that it cannot be ended, only stilled.

The spirit of Don Quixote burnishes the six main characters of this novel that begins with the arrival of North Americans Kyle and Carmen Daly in Central America. The two settle within a civilization awash, into a culture termed indistinct even by those who exploit it. Their adventure entangles them. They are trapped between an on-rush of modern values and those of the archaic Maya, whose descendents outcast by the society of which they form the bulwark remain steadfast in chivalric beliefs. As unwitting abettors to religious, social and economic bigotry patronized by U.S. missionaries, embassy staff, cable television ministries and businessmen mateseekers, along with a cadre of Hispanic ado...

I wont claim, like many do, that this thing called aging sneaked up on me. After all, I have been growing older for quite some time. On the other hand, it wasnt until I came to realize that the whole process would end up at old that I started to pay attention. With no defense against the inevitability of headlong growth . . . more frankly known as shrinkage . . . and being locked in with it alone for twenty-four hours every day, I decided to make a game of it. For those of you who do not just smirk at the back covers of chapbooks but actually read the poetry insideyou, the twerps, nerds, dweebs, wimps, duffers, dolts, rubes, yokels, geeks, goody two-shoes, molly-coddled milquetoasts, and jel...
