From Brows to Trust
Embodied conversational agents (ECAs) are autonomous software entities with human-like appearance and communication skills. These agents can take on a number of different roles, for example, as an assistant, tutor, information provider, or customer service agent. They may also simply represent or entertain a user. The precise nature and benefits of different characteristics of ECAs requires careful investigation. Questions range from the function of an eyebrow raise to mechanisms for assessing and improving ECA trustworthiness. This book will help experts and designers in the specification and development of applications incorporating ECAs. Part 1 provides guidelines for evaluation methodologies and the identification of design and evaluation parameters. Part 2 demonstrates the importance of considering the user's perspective and interaction experience. Part 3 addresses issues in fine-tuning design parameters of ECAs and verifying the perceived effect. Finally, in Part 4 lessons learned from a number of application case studies are presented. The book is intended for both ECA researchers in academia and industry, and developers and designers interested in applying the technology.
Animating Expressive Characters for Social Interaction
Animated interactive characters and robots that are able to function in human social environments are being developed by a large number of research groups worldwide. Emotional expression, as a key element of human social interaction and communication, is often added in an attempt to make them appear more natural to us. How can such artefacts be given emotional displays that are believable and acceptable to humans? This is the central question of Animating Expressive Characters for Social Interaction. The ability to express and recognize emotions is a fundamental aspect of social interaction. Not only is it a central research question, it has been explored in animated films, dance, and other expressive arts for a much longer period. This book is unique in presenting a multi-disciplinary approach to animation in its broadest sense: from internal mechanisms to external displays, not only from a graphical perspective, but more generally examining how to give characters an anima, so that they appear as life-like entities and social partners to humans. Constraint Processing
This volume contains 15 thoroughly refereed full research papers selected from the presentations given during two workshops on constraint processing; these workshops were held in conjunction with the International Congress on Computer Systems and Applied Mathematics (St. Petersburg, Russia, July 1993) and the European Conference on Artificial Intelligence (Amsterdam, The Netherlands, August 1994). This volume essentially contributes to integrating the different approaches to the young and very active field of constraint processing by offering papers from logic programming, knowledge representation, expert systems, theoretical computer science, operations research, and other fields. Among contributions are two surveys, by Podelski and van Roy and by Freuder.
Intelligent Virtual Agents
The origin of the Intelligent Virtual Agents conference dates from a successful workshop on Intelligent Virtual Environments held in Brighton at the 13th European Conference on Artificial Intelligence (ECAI'98). This workshop was followed by a second one held in Salford in Manchester in 1999. Multimodal Signals: Cognitive and Algorithmic Issues
This book constitutes the thoroughly refereed post-conference proceedings of the COST Action 2102 and euCognition supported international school on Multimodal Signals: 'Cognitive and Algorithmic Issues' held in Vietri sul Mare, Italy, in April 2008. Analysis of Verbal and Nonverbal Communication and Enactment.The Processing Issues
This volume brings together the advanced research results obtained by the European COST Action 2102 "Cross Modal Analysis of Verbal and Nonverbal Communication", primarily discussed at the PINK SSPnet-COST2102 International Conference on Analysis of Verbal and Nonverbal Communication and Enactment: The Processing Issues, held in Budapest, Hungary, in September 2010.
