Bacterial Flora in Digestive Disease

Hundreds of bacterial species make up human gut flora. The intestine has at least 400 different species of bacteria totaling over 1012 organisms. Of these, 99% are anaerobic bacteria. The gastrointestinal tract is then exposed to countless numbers of bacterial species and foreign antigens and has embedded a unique and complex network of immunological and non-immunological mechanisms to protect the host from potentially harmful pathogens. Healthy individuals are generally tolerant to their own microbiota, but such tolerance is impaired in patients with both organic and functional gastrointestinal diseases. The advancement of the knowledge on microbial-gut interactions in health and disease ha...

Data collection in health programs databases is prone to errors that might hinder its use to identify risk indicators and to support optimal decision making in health services. This is the case, in colo-rectal cancer (CRC) screening programs, when trying to optimize the cut-off point to select the patients who will undergo a colonoscopy, especially when having insufficient offer of colonoscopies or temporary excessive demand. It is necessary therefore to establish ,Äúgood practice,Äù guidelines for data collection, management and analysis. With the aim of improving the redesign of a regional CRC screening program platform, we performed an exhaustive analysis of the data collected, proposing a set of recommendations for its correct maintenance. We also carried out the curation of the available data in order to finally have a clean source of information that would allow proper future analyses. We present here the result of such study, showing the importance of the design of the database and of the user interface to avoid redundancies keeping consistency and checking known correlations, with the final aim of providing quality data that permit to take correct decisions.

Treatment and Prognostic Assessment of Liver Cirrhosis and Its Complications

About 2 million deaths worldwide annually are attributable to liver diseases. Among them, half die from cirrhosis and the other half from viral hepatitis and hepatocellular carcinoma. When patients with liver cirrhosis develop to the decompensated stage, a variety of complications will occur, such as ascites, spontaneous bacterial peritonitis, variceal bleeding, hepatic encephalopathy, hepatorenal syndrome, and jaundice, which will seriously affect the patient's quality of life with reduced survival time and increased socioeconomic burden. Therefore, early assessment and clinical management of cirrhosis and its complications are crucial for both clinicians and patients.
