Modernism, Technology, and the Body

This book is a study of the relations between the body and its technologies in modernism. Tim Armstrong traces the links between modernist literary texts and medical, psychological and social theory across a range of writers, including Yeats, Henry James, Eliot, Stein, and Pound. Armstrong shows how modernist texts enact experimental procedures which have their origins in nineteenth-century psychophysics, biology, and bodily reform techniques, but within a context in which the body is reconceived and subjected to new modes of production, representation and commodification. Drawing on a wide range of disciplines, Armstrong challenges the received oppositions between technology and literature, the instrumental and the aesthetic, by demonstrating the leaky boundaries and complex interconnections between these domains. This book offers a cultural history of modernism as it negotiated the enduring fact of the human body in a period of rapid technological change.

Introduction to the English Legal System - Revision Guide

  • Categories: Law

The English Legal System is a legal system that dates back to 1066, evolving over time until the present day. Throughout the world, it is known as common law. While Common law consists of case-law and statutes, it has reached its present state by incorporating elements of international law, prerogative power and other legal and non-legal sources such as conventions and customs. This book does not repeat material that is available in many textbooks that are in print. Rather, it endeavours to present every topic in plain language and concludes every chapter with a fictitious explanatory sample case. In other words, it is an introduction to the subject of the English Legal System, the objective of which is to explain the topic both theoretically and in its application. Additionally, this book will assist students to prepare for courseworks/examinations. At the end of the book there is also a test that summarises all the subjects contained in the book, which is appropriate to the first stage SQE examination model that will be introduced in September 2021.

This book, by Sonja Zmerli and Marc Hooghe, presents cutting-edge empirical research on political trust as a relational concept. From a European comparative perspective it addresses a broad range of contested issues. Can political trust be conceived as a one-dimensional concept and to what extent do international population surveys warrant the culturally equivalent measurement of political trust across European societies? Is there indeed an observable general trend of declining levels of political trust? What are the individual, societal and political prerequisites of political trust and how do they translate into trustful attitudes? Why do so many Eastern European citizens still distrust th...

"Worldwide harmonisation of migration statistics is something international bodies dream of. And yet, attempts by organisations needing comparative data have not proven very successful thus far. More than just problematising the incomparability of migrati
