This book is the English translation of the new edition of the Copper Scroll of Qumran Cave 3 (3Q15). The restoration of the three sheets of copper by the Mécénat of the French Electric Company (EDF) in the 1990s made an improved decipherment possible. The physical restoration of the complete scroll is published in the two large volumes of the French edition accompanied by many photographs and drawings, which the reader will find to be sufficient. In spite of its importance for the textual history and the theological significance of the Book of Ben Sira, especially in its two different Greek versions, the 1951 doctoral thesis of Conleth Kearns has never been published and is only in circulation in photocopies. Kearns brought together a great quantity of textual and theological observations on the additions to the first Greek version concerning eschatology which are not to be found anywhere else until now. He has actually shown that these additions are part of a whole pseudepigraphic literature. That is the reason why this monograph deserves publication, even after sixty years.

A literary-critical analysis is embarked to show how Matthew highlights the primacy, authority, and exclusivity of Jesus’ role as the Teacher of God’s will and how he features five long discourses in the narrative. Two cultural parallels, the Teacher of Righteousness and Epictetus, are studied for comparison. The ways in which they are remembered in the literature and in which they shape the lives of their followers provide proper historical perspectives and useful frames of reference. Finally, a social-historical reading of the three teachers and their followers, in the light of pertinent sociological theories (sociology of knowledge, group formation), indicates that Jesus the One Teacher serves four crucial functions for his readers in Matthew’s church: polemic, apologetic, didactic, and pastoral.
