Motivated by the need to bring together researchers involved in the acquisition, learning and teaching of the Croatian language and foreign languages to learners at lower elementary level, the recurring scientific conferences Children and Languages Today were established in 2001. At the time the Croatian academic community was short of a conference that was dedicated entirely to critical thinking and the exchange of research findings, outcomes and experience in these particular study areas. As it turns out, Children and Languages Today has served as an incentive for other conferences and meetings in Croatia that continue to promote research in the fields of first and second language acquisit...

Essays in Honour of Boris Berić’s Sixty-Fifth Birthday

Written as a Festschrift honouring a beloved professor, colleague, and friend, this volume comprises a collection of essays offering a wide array of contemporary approaches to literature, linguistics, and applied linguistics. It covers a variety of topics, ranging from medieval to contemporary literature and language, and explores genres as diverse as fantasy, dystopia, drama, poetry, and film, addressing issues such as post- and transhumanism, age, gender, identity, family, metonymy, and narrative discourse. The diversity of themes and methodologies here makes the collection a widely applicable resource in the academic discussion of literature, language, and culture, both as a significant contribution to different philological fields and a useful educational tool for anyone teaching or studying English, Anglophone literature, British, American, and German studies, English as a Second Language, linguistics, cognitive linguistics, and applied linguistics, or conducting research in these fields.

Detective Fiction for Young Readers

Detective Fiction for Young Readers is an examination of contemporary mystery stories for children and young adults. This volume explores how the conventions, rules, and expectations of adult mystery fiction have filtered down, so to speak, especially in the past several decades, to writing for younger readers. The book is organized into three sections that explore the whodunit, the hardboiled, and the metaphysical styles of mystery fiction. Furthermore, this text analyzes how each style has been adapted for a younger audience, acknowledging and exploring representative novels most in keeping with that style. This volume is ideal for students, academics, and readers interested in children’s mystery fiction that adheres to formulas made popular after the golden age of classic detective fiction.

Risk in Children’s Adventure Literature

Risk in Children’s Adventure Literature examines the way in which adults discuss the reading and entertainment habits of children, and with it the assumption that adventure is a timeless and stable constant whose meaning and value is self-evident. A closer enquiry into British and American adventure texts for children over the past 150 years reveals a host of complexities occluded by the term, and the ways in which adults invoke adventure as a means of attempting to get to grips with the nebulous figure of ‘the child’. Writing about adventure also necessitates writing about risk, and this book argues that adults have historically used adventure to conceptualise the relationship between...
