A Grammar of Tamashek (Tuareg of Mali)

The series builds an extensive collection of high quality descriptions of languages around the world. Each volume offers a comprehensive grammatical description of a single language together with fully analyzed sample texts and, if appropriate, a word list and other relevant information which is available on the language in question. There are no restrictions as to language family or area, and although special attention is paid to hitherto undescribed languages, new and valuable treatments of better known languages are also included. No theoretical model is imposed on the authors; the only criterion is a high standard of scientific quality.

This book constitutes a seminal contribution to the fields of Islamic architectural history and gender studies. It is the first major empirical study of the history and current state of mosque building in Senegal and the first study of mosque space from a gender perspective. The author positions Senegalese mosques within the field of Islamic architectural history, unraveling their history through pre-colonial travelers’ accounts to conversations with present-day planners, imams and women who continually shape and reshape the mosques they worship in. Using contemporary Dakar as a case study, the book’s second aim is to explore the role of women in the “making and remaking” of mosques. In particular, the rise of non-tariqa grass-roots movements (i.e.: the “Sunni/Ibadou” movement) has empowered women (particularly young women) and has greatly strengthened their capacity to use mosques as places of spirituality, education and socialization. The text is aimed at several specialized readerships: readers interested in Islam in West Africa, in the role of women in Islam, as well as those interested in the sociology and art-history of mosques.

Mali: Third Review Under the Extended Credit Facility Arrangement, Request for Waiver of Performance Criteria, and Request for Modification of Performance Criteria - Press Release; and Staff Report

In spite of the implementation of measures to strengthen public financial management during the last quarter of 2014, the performance criteria (PC) for end-2014 relating to gross tax revenue and bank and market financing of the government were not met owing to administrative weaknesses at the customs administration and a conflict with importers. However, following the increase in oil product taxation and steps to implement results-based management at the tax and customs administration, tax revenue was back on track at end-March 2015.

Salafism and Political Order in Africa

Salafism and Political Order in Africa

Violent Islamic extremism is affecting a growing number of countries in sub-Saharan Africa. In some, jihadi Salafi organizations have established home bases and turned into permanent security challengers. However, other countries have managed to prevent the formation or curb the spread of homegrown jihadi Salafi organizations. In this book, Sebastian Elischer provides a comparative analysis of how different West and East African states have engaged with fundamentalist Muslim groups between the 1950s and today. In doing so, he establishes a causal link between state-imposed organizational gatekeepers in the Islamic sphere and the absence of homegrown jihadi Salafism. Illustrating that the contemporary manifestation of violent Islamic extremism in sub-Saharan Africa is an outcome of strategic political decisions that are deeply embedded in countries' autocratic pasts, he challenges conventional notions of statehood on the African continent, and provides new insight into the evolving relationships between secular and religious authority.

Art and Place

  • Categories: Art

The book brings together a series of essays about art in Hong Kong written over the last ten years, with the intention of offering a personal chronicle of the Hong Kong art world during a time of great change. Many of the essays concern themselves with the work of local artists, but Western and Chinese artists whose works have been exhibited in Hong Kong during this period are also discussed. In addition to a consideration of particular artists and works of art, there are also essays which engage with debates that have been taking place in Hong Kong concerning curatorship and various arts policy issues. Fully illustrated and written in a straightforward style, Art and Place is one of the first serious attempts to evaluate the art of Hong Kong. It should be of use to anyone interested in the cultural life of one of Asia's leading cities.
