Journey of the Midnight Sun
This is the true story of the journey of the Midnight Sun Mosque. In 2010 a Winnipeg-based charity raised funds to build and ship a mosque to Inuvik, one of the most northern towns in Canada’s Arctic. A small but growing Muslim community there had been using a cramped trailer for their services, but there just wasn't enough space. The mosque travelled over 4,000 kilometers on a journey fraught with poor weather, incomplete bridges, narrow roads, low traffic wires and a deadline to get on the last barge heading up the Mackenzie River before the first winter freeze. But it made it just in time and is now one of the most northern mosques in the world. This beautiful picture book reminds us that the collective dream of fostering a multicultural and tolerant Canada exists and that people of all backgrounds will come together to build bridges and overcome obstacles for the greater good of their neighbors.
Khalil's Journey
Khalil "the Companion" is given his name by the One Above at his birth in 1903. Despite evidence of this divine interest, Khalil's 80-odd years of life remain fairly ordinary, even though many of these years are spent under the far-from-ordinary conditions of the System in South Africa. Apart from the high moments--an adolescent trip to India, the fleshly delights on his wedding night, and a memorable evening spent with the Black Pimpernel at an abortive New Unity Movement meeting--Khalil's later life is mostly taken up with trying to keep his wife and children happy and fed. Nevertheless, just as Khalil's birth was an event discussed at length by the aunties of the neighborhood, at the end of his life, Khalil realizes his life's journey contains many memorable moments.
Life Unshackled
Rudra’s life, until he met Krupa, a commercial sex worker, was shackled, and lacking light was filled with darkness. Rudra was a teetotaler, but he haunted a dingy dim-lit bar, sipping soft drinks. Rudra did not expect anything from the women of the world’s oldest profession, but he walked a street where they waited to be picked up. Rudra craved, paradoxically, not only for solitude in darkness but also for a ray of non-interfering company in his lonely life. Rudra’s behavior was the result of a dysfunctional milieu’s conditionings, which had started attacking him right from kindergarten, and continued to do so all through the duration of his first job after graduation, until his unconditional love for Krupa enabled him to challenge and vanquish them. Rudra’s life finally walked unshackled, from the bondages of dark conditionings, proudly in the light with Krupa who also freed herself from her misery aided by his moral courage.
