In the Maw of the Earth Monster

As portals to the supernatural realm that creates and animates the universe, caves have always been held sacred by the peoples of Mesoamerica. From ancient times to the present, Mesoamericans have made pilgrimages to caves for ceremonies ranging from rituals of passage to petitions for rain and a plentiful harvest. So important were caves to the pre-Hispanic peoples that they are mentioned in Maya hieroglyphic writing and portrayed in the Central Mexican and Oaxacan pictorial codices. Many ancient settlements were located in proximity to caves. This volume gathers papers from twenty prominent Mesoamerican archaeologists, linguists, and ethnographers to present a state-of-the-art survey of ri...

This book offers a comprehensive and in-depth analysis of the development of writing in the region of Ñuu Dzaui (the Mixtec people in Southern Mexico) from its earliest manifestations up to the present. Specialist essays (mostly in English, some in Spanish) present new archeological data, contribute to the decipherment of precolonial pictorial manuscripts, and analyze historical documents written in Mesoamerican languages during the colonial period. From this diachronic perspective much attention is given to the changing social contexts as well as to methodological and interpretive issues. In addition, contemporary projects are discussed, which register oral tradition, create space for native languages within the national school system, and produce new poetic works. The inclusion of two Mixtec documentary films on a inserted dvd provokes important comments on the representation of indigenous American cultures in general.

Choosing to Care

In Choosing to Care, Kyle E. Ciani examines the long history of interactions between parents and social reformers from diverse backgrounds in the development of social welfare programs, particularly childcare, in San Diego, California. Ciani explores how a variety of people—from destitute parents and tired guardians to benevolent advocates and professional social workers—connected over childcare concerns in a city that experienced tremendous demographic changes caused by urbanization, immigration, and the growth of a local U.S. military infrastructure from 1850 to 1950. Choosing to Care examines four significant areas where San Diego’s programs were distinct from, and contributed to, t...

Intestinal Microbiome: Functional Aspects in Health and Disease

The intestinal microbiome is especially important during the first thousand days of life. Exposure to microbes in utero significantly impacts fetal development, in part through epigenetic processes and in part through hormonal influences which cause a change in the mother's intestinal microbiome. The nature of delivery and perinatal antibiotic treatment, as well as diet (especially in the postpartum period), can also influence initial microbial colonization and the development of appropriate intestinal defense mechanisms. These, in turn, can affect the expression of allergy, autoimmune disease, and brain function, among other things, later in life. The first part of this publication focuses on the development of the human microbiome in utero and the importance of normal colonization of the newborn gut in immune development and disease prevention. The second section deals with the normal development of gut microbiota and with clinical conditions associated with dysbiosis. The final chapters cover various aspects of human milk evolution and oligosaccharides.
