If a city based its planning decisions on the needs of an international bureaucracy rather than on the traditional needs of local residents and businesses, how would that city change? Alex G. Papadopoulos addresses this question with a detailed study of how the nineteenth-century quartiers of Leopold and Nord-Est in Brussels have been transformed materially and functionally since the European Communities decided to locate their administrative headquarters there in 1957. Drawing on game and rational-choice theories, spatial analysis, and urban morphology studies, Papadopoulos analyzes how the landscape of Brussels's center has evolved over the last three decades under the influence of successive coalitions of local and foreign elites. He describes how international real-estate developers form ephemeral, flexible, and specialized regimes of cooperation with governmental organizations at all levels and with special-interest lobbies to carry out major urban projects, while local neighborhood groups, conservationists, and political factions such as the Green Party oppose them with qualitatively similar regimes of resistance.
Self-contained and comprehensive, this definitive new edition provides a complete overview of the intersection of gravity, supergravity, and superstrings.
During the last five years, after the first meeting on OC Quaternionic Structures in Mathematics and PhysicsOCO, interest in quaternionic geometry and its applications has continued to increase. Progress has been made in constructing new classes of manifolds with quaternionic structures (quaternionic Knhler, hyper-Knhler, hyper-complex, etc.), studying the differential geometry of special classes of such manifolds and their submanifolds, understanding relations between the quaternionic structure and other differential-geometric structures, and also in physical applications of quaternionic geometry. Some generalizations of classical quaternion-like structures (like HKT structures and hyper-Kn...
This book explores competing definitions of Hellenism in the making of the Greek state by drawing on critical historical and geopolitical perspectives and their intersection with difference and exclusion. It examines Greece’s central role in shaping the state system, regional security, and nationalisms of the Balkans, the Black Sea, and the Eastern Mediterranean regions. Understanding the Greek State's social constitution helps learn about the past and present intentions and strategies as well as local, national, and European notions of security and identity. The book looks at the relation of subaltern communities to state power and the state’s ability and willingness to negotiate differ...

This volume addresses issues of precariousness in a broad, interdisciplinary perspective, looking at socio-economic transformations as well as the identity formation and political organizing of precarious people. The collection bridges empirical research with social theory to problematize and analyse the precariat.
This is the first-ever book about product and country images. It discusses the nature and role and influence of product-country images in international marketing strategy and consumer behavior. Thousands of companies use country identifiers as part of their international marketing strategy, and hundreds of researchers have studied the ways in which these identifiers influence behavior. As markets become more international, the more prominently the origin of products will figure in sellers' and buyers' decisions. The time is ripe for practitioners and academicians to delve into the insights offered in this seminal volume so as to better prepare for meeting the competitive challenges of the global marketplace. Product-Country Images is a wide-ranging and state-of-the-art book offering specific information and case studies to further understanding of the various aspects of this complex topic.
